TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Time to Apply for Scholarships Three scholarships are available through the Siletz Tribe: Arthur Bensell Memorial Scholarship, Siletz Scholarship, and CTSI - Pepsi Scholarship. Arthur Bensell Scholarship: specifically for students enrolled in a program leading to a degree in education Siletz Scholarship: specifically for students enrolled in a program leading to a degree in a medical field CTSI - Pepsi Scholarship: open to all students regardless of major The programs manager and Siletz Tribal Education Committee administer the scholarships. Applications are available annually in April. All new and continuing higher education and adult vocational training students are sent an application. Application for all financial aid is required of students. Tribal students are expected to apply for these scholarships. Scholarships range from $500 to $ 1,000 for one academic year. Scholarship recipients are announced in July and awarded at the annual Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow in August of each year. All three scholarships require the following: Completed application form Documentation of acceptance at an accredited vocational training or higher education institution, two-year, four-year, or graduate school / 500- to 1,000-word essay on a specific annual theme / Three letters of recommendation / / Siletz Scholarship 2000-2001 Application Form To apply for the Siletz Scholarship, please submit the following: 1. Documentation of acceptance at an accredited vocational training or higher education institution, two-year, four-year, or graduate school. 2. A 500-word essay addressing the annual theme. 3. Three letters of recommendation. Essays will be judged on content, theme development and organization, use of proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Essay Theme: Describe your major area of study and its importance to you and the tribe. Awards: $500 (up to three awards per year). Scholarship may not be awarded unless a minimum of two applications are received. The age categories are as follows: Little Miss Siletz - 7 to 12 Jr. Miss Siletz - 13 to 17 Miss Siletz - 18 to 24 Young women interested in running in one of these categories can contact Craig Whitehead at 1-800-922-1399, ext. 230, or 541-444-8230 to get your application. The pageant is scheduled for Aug. 9, 2001, and the winners will be crowned before the first grand entry of the Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow on Aug. 10. The deadline to get your applications into the Pow-Wow Committee is July 2, 2001. Any applications that are turned in from July 3 to July 15 will be accepted only by the approval of the Pow-Wow Committee. All applications that are turned in after July 15 will not be accepted for this year. You will be judged on your knowledge of tribal and family history, poise and personality, speaking abilities, dance abilities in both the Feather Dance and Intertribal styles, and ticket sales. Each contestant will receive a commission on the number of tickets that she sells. The commission rates are as follows: 200 to 500 at 20 percent; 501 to 1,000 at 25 percent, and 1,001 and over at 30 percent.
