R.COLL. 78 .06 5523 v. 29 no. 4 April 200î ILETZ NEWS thly publication by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians Vol. 29, No. 4, April 2001 Siletz Smokehouse Reopens With a blessing that prayed for “positive energy in all nooks and crannies,’’ tribal elder Agnes Baker- Pilgrim helped reopen the Siletz Tribal Smokehouse in Depoe Bay on March 1. The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians has partnered with Oregon Smoked Foods, Inc. to operate the smokehouse in Depoe Bay and to manage the Siletz Tribal Smokehouse brand of smoked salmon products. The smokehouse will offer fresh smoked salmon, fresh crab, shelf-stable smoked salmon, salmon jerky, salmon pate, beef jerky, cheeses, jams, candy, cookies, and other ready-to-eat gourmet food items. The Siletz Tribe has operated the smokehouse since 1992. Along with Chinook Winds Casino & Convention Center in Lincoln City, the smokehouse continues to serve as a viable part of the tribe’s economic development plan. Troy Johnson, vice president of Oregon Smoked Foods, said he knew that the tribe had stopped producing its smoked products in 1999, but realized that these products still had high brand name recognition. He then contacted the tribe and an agreement was reached that Eddy Ehret, Agnes Baker-Pilgrim, and Selene Rilatos sing a song during the blessing ceremony. years of experience in the gourmet food industry, 10 years in the fishing industry, and 30 years in owning and operating small businesses. Agnes Baker-Pilgrim includes royalties on sales of the products and use of the brand name . Terry Lyons, president of Oregon Smoked Foods, and his wife, Joy, run the smokehouse, which is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Johnson and his wife, Angie Lyons-Johnson (Terry and Joy’s daughter), work at the Wilsonville location. The family has 13 Oregon Smoked Foods, Inc. is a family-owned and -operated company based in Wilsonville, Ore. Before adding the Siletz Tribal Smokehouse line, Oregon Smoked Foods created and marketed its Original Smokehouse brand of smoked salmon products. Oregon Smoked Foods’ manufacturing activities have been transferred to the Siletz Tribal Smokehouse in Depoe Bay and the wholesale sales office continues at its Wilsonville location. Stutzman Joins Series of Indian Presenters at OSU Oregon State University will bring to campus this spring 11 Indian scholars, artists, educators, activists, and storytellers, providing a forum where OSU students and community members can hear their perspectives on their lives, beliefs, and relationships to the environment. “Native American Philosophies” will be offered each Wednesday, 6:30 to 8 p.m., from April 4 to June 6 at Gilfillan Auditorium. Admission is free, though seating is limited. The project began as a course for OSU students. Course organizers also Siletz News Confederated Tribes of Siletz P.O. The Indian speakers represent a number of tribes from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. They include Esther Stutzman, a Kalapuya storyteller and member of the Siletz Tribe; Grace Thorpe, daughter of Olympic great Jim Thorpe and an anti-nuclear waste activist; Paula Gunn Allen, a faculty member at UCLA and well-known feminist writer; Oren Lyons, a ✓ .....
