Siletz Smokehouse Reopens
With a blessing that prayed for
“positive energy in all nooks and
crannies,’’ tribal elder Agnes Baker-
Pilgrim helped reopen the Siletz Tribal
Smokehouse in Depoe Bay on March 1.
The Confederated Tribes of Siletz
Indians has partnered with Oregon
Smoked Foods, Inc. to operate the
smokehouse in Depoe Bay and to manage
the Siletz Tribal Smokehouse brand of
smoked salmon products. The
smokehouse will offer fresh smoked
salmon, fresh crab, shelf-stable smoked
salmon, salmon jerky, salmon pate, beef
jerky, cheeses, jams, candy, cookies, and
other ready-to-eat gourmet food items.
The Siletz Tribe has operated the
smokehouse since 1992. Along with
Chinook Winds Casino & Convention
Center in Lincoln City, the smokehouse
continues to serve as a viable part of
the tribe’s economic development plan.
Troy Johnson, vice president of
Oregon Smoked Foods, said he knew
that the tribe had stopped producing its
smoked products in 1999, but realized
that these products still had high brand
name recognition. He then contacted the
tribe and an agreement was reached that

the smokehouse, which is open from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Johnson and
his wife, Angie Lyons-Johnson (Terry
and Joy’s daughter), work at the
Wilsonville location. The family has 13

Stutzman Joins Series of Indian Presenters at OSU
Oregon State University will bring
to campus this spring 11 Indian
scholars, artists, educators, activists,
and storytellers, providing a forum
where OSU students and community
members can hear their perspectives on
their lives, beliefs, and relationships to
the environment.
“Native American Philosophies”
will be offered each Wednesday, 6:30
to 8 p.m., from April 4 to June 6 at
Gilfillan Auditorium. Admission is free,
though seating is limited.

wanted to engage the community in the
ideas presented by the speakers and are
inviting the public to attend for free.
OSU faculty are working with local
tribes to bring high school students in
for the lectures.
“This will provide a place where
Native voices will be heard and
carefully considered and where many
ways of knowing - music, poetry,
discussion, lecture and storytelling -
can help us all re-examine what we most
deeply believe ... and what sustains us
physically, emotionally and spiritually,”
said Kathleen Dean Moore, a professor
of philosophy at OSU.
The Indian speakers represent a
number of tribes from the Pacific
Northwest and beyond. They include
Esther Stutzman, a Kalapuya storyteller
and member of the Siletz Tribe; Grace
Thorpe, daughter of Olympic great Jim
Thorpe and an anti-nuclear waste
activist; Paula Gunn Allen, a faculty
member at UCLA and well-known
feminist writer; Oren Lyons, a
