Group Addresses Long-Term Care for Elders Several Siletz Tribal members and tribal staff met in March to discuss how the tribe can best help elders remain independent. This group, called the Home and Community-Based Long- Term Care work group, identified elders needs (health, housing, and transportation topped the list), which ones are being met and which ones are not, potential resources, and a future course of action. The group’s mission is “To identify the needs of elders and develop a plan to provide home and community-based long-term care that permits elders to remain as independent as possible in a setting of their choice.” Work group members include Gladys Bolton, Kathryn Dick, Sharon McCrary, Judy Muschamp, Bonnie Petersen, Cathy Rasmussen, Maria Westervelt, and Danelle Zosel- Sanderson. They were joined by Sally Bowman and Karen Hooker of the OSU Department of Gerontology, College of Health and Human Performance. Tom Chandler, tribal planner/grant writer, facilitated the meeting. A similar session was held at the elders’meeting on April 14. This gave more people the opportunity to examine the parameters of home and community-based care. This group also identified the need for insurance and additional care providers as additional priorities for elders. See Spring Competition Pow-Wow results and photos on pages 14-16.
