TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Arthur Bensell Memorial Scholarship 2000 - 2001 Application Arthur S. Bensell was an educator, civic leader, Tribal Council member, and tribal chairman. He spent many years in service to his community and tribe as mayor of the city of Siletz and tribal leader. Bensell attended Ohio State University and graduated from Heidelberg College in 1934. During his career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, he served as a teacher, principal, and reservation principal in Minnesota, Alaska, and North Dakota. Upon returning to Siletz, he became involved in tribal business affairs and served many years on the tribe’s Education Committee and always strove for better educational opportunities for tribal members. In loving memory of Arthur Bensell, a memorial fund was established through the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. The memorial fund is used to honor and award tribal members majoring in education. The $1,000 scholarship is administered by the Tribal Education Committee and strengthened by various fund-raising activities throughout the year. This program will run from the Monday following the release of school to Aug. 31, 2001, and provide up to 200 hours of work experience training or classroom training services. Applicants must meet income guidelines, with the exception of a 15 percent budgetary allowance for at-risk youth. We began taking calls to schedule an application appointment on April 30, 2001. If you would like to apply, please call your local area office and ask for the tribal services assistant to set up an intake appointment. Education is a program priority. Therefore, all participants must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and be at current grade level to participate in a work experience placement. Youth applicants who do not meet these academic requirements will need to participate in a classroom component to assist with educational requirements. Limited space is available. All applications must include the necessary documentation for a final determination of eligibility. All completed applications will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. All SYEPapplicant families must meet the 2001 U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines, unless they are determined to be an at-risk youth.
