TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Siletz Elders Host Gathering The Siletz Elders are hosting a “Circle of Wisdom” Gathering on May 8,2001, at Chinook Winds Casino & Convention Center. The gathering will include two speakers, Clifford Snyder from the Chinook Tribe and Harold Belmont Sr., a well-known national speaker. Belmont will be the main speaker and he is very inspiring. He will share the struggles he has faced in his life from alcohol addiction to diabetes and the path to recovery. Lunch and dinner will be provided. The gathering will conclude with a social evening of oldies music. All elders are encouraged to attend. We have invited 12 different tribes and are looking forward to having fun. The Elders Program will have a limited number of rooms available for those who need to travel. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis and will be for the night of May 8. The Siletz Elders Program had 24 elders from Portland, Springfield, Salem, and Siletz attend. It was a very exciting event. As a part of their gathering, they choose a king and queen. Every participant receives a ticket for a door prize drawing. This is also how they pick their king and queen. As they drew the first name, we were very excited as they announced that a Siletz Elder had been picked for king. Bruce “Snoball” Butler III was pronounced king of the 2001 Elders’ Gathering. He was honored with a Pendleton blanket, shell necklace, and many other gifts. The gathering included a wonderful lunch, door prizes for everyone, Bingo, and an evening dinner. We stayed in the beautiful new Mill Casino Hotel. The gathering concluded the next morning with breakfast. Another Year of Wisdom Happy Birthday!
