It’s Happening at Chinook Winds • ••by Teresa Simmons Dionne Warwick Comes to Chinook Winds Don’t “Walk on By” when Dionne Warwick brings her fantastic vocal abilities to Chinook Winds Casino on April 6 and 7. She has been captivating audiences since Burt Bacharach first heard her back in 1960. While attending music college, she began doing regular session work in New York. Once composer, arranger, and producer Bacharach heard her while doing a session for The Drifters, he asked her to sing on demos of songs he was writing with new partner Hal David. In 1962, Bacharach and David presented one such demo to Scepter Records. The label’s president, Florence Greenberg, didn’t want the song but did want the voice. Warwick began a hit- filled 12-year association with the New York label. During her association with Bacharach and David, they racked up 30 hit singles and nearly 20 best-selling albums during their first decade of gold. Tunes like “Do You Know The Way To San Jose,” “Message To Michael,” ‘This Girl’s In Love With You,” and “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” established Warwick as a consummate entertainer. Known as the artist who “bridged the gap,” her music transcended race, Dionne Warwick culture, and musical boundaries with a soulful blend of pop, gospel, and R&B. By making her debut performance at the Olympia Theater in Paris in 1963, Warwick also became the first black female pop and soul singer to achieve international stardom. As she was establishing herself as a major force in American contemporary music, she was simultaneously winning over audiences throughout Europe with early hits like “Anyone Who Had A Heart,” and “Walk on By.” She was the first black female performer to appear before the Queen of England at the Royal Command Performance in 1968. Since then, she has performed before numerous heads of state the world over. Warwick became the first contemporary black female artist to popularize classic movie themes with “Alfie,” and the theme from “The Valley of the Dolls,” debut in her first movie role, and win the prestigious award for “Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance,” a feat previously accomplished only by one of her own African-American she-roes, the late Ella Fitzgerald. Warwick also has led the fight for AIDS research with her various recordings, benefits to fund AIDS research, participation in the all-star charity sing “We Are The World,” and performing at “Live Aid” in 1984. As the recipient of countless awards, her status as a musical icon and humanitarian is legendary. Don’t miss your chance to see this sensational talent in person at Chinook Winds Casino & Convention Center on April 6 and 7.
