In teresting operations carried out in one department at the Highland I'ark plant of the Ford Motor Company in which a number of special Kurd designed machines pluy an important part. Just how much activity there Is In this department may be gained from the Tact that J J5 miles of steel ribbon is used daily In the production of roller bearings at tho present output schedule, per mitting the asembly of 61,000 complete bearings every day. The steel ribbon used Is five thirty-seconds of an inch thick and about an Inch wide. It is wound in l'ord designed and built machines known as "winders" and when It emerges from these mach ines Is in the form of a heavy spiral rod with a narrow opening through the center. The rods art cut into proper lengths lor tin rollers, and the short lengths art then hardened and tempered. Grinding operations in which the. rollers are ground to very close limits ure carried on In other 1-ord designed machines, know n as "centerless" grinders in which the precision necssdry iu the- rol lers Is easily regulated. The last operation before the rollers are finally assembled und welded in the cages Is one thro ugh which every finished bear. Ing must puss the process. ol of being demagnetized. Tract, ically every bearing o.lier having passed through the various manu facturing operation carries u certain amount of magnetism. It this remained the rollers would ha e a tendency to pick up und retain small pieces of sleet that1 might by chance get into the sle eve of the beuring.
