No longer can it .be post poned until some future and during the Interim of copious rain will drive all Irrigation talk into silence. Without irrigation this valley will go along as usual. People will be come wealthy for the cr6ps each year take care of that feature. Land val ues may advance but not to any mark ed extent, for the land buyer today FALL RACES! WHY JfOTl It would be a fine thing of this com munity would unite in having a fall race meet In La Grande. There are many modern methods of entertain ment, but really it Is hard to beat a horBe race for pleasing all of the peo ple. There is something about rac ing that will never die. The town of Wallowa is contem plating a race meet and a gun club shoot which will be a feature of fall festivities for Wallowa county. En forni win VinvB the county fair and there will be horse racing and a gen eral good time there. Over at Flora a fair will be held in September and arrangements have been made for racing. Then why not have ' race meet In La Grande? It Is not necessary to try to attract eastern horses, or even harness hors es from off the big circuit, for there are plenty of good horses from Walla Walla to Boise which would be enter ed if the purses were sufficient to jus tify It. : A good old fashioned race meet would aid In enthusing this commun ity fts few thlng3' could. It would cause everyone to arrange for a few days off to attend the mces and Wal lowa county would furnish many peo ple. - .' '.
