I t.-.tc-r Vv&ilav.-a vouaty wbre there is
in abundance of water for Irrigation
and in many, places all available is
under the ditch.
With irrigation thi3 Grande Ronde
valley becomes the spot of all spots.
Here the altitude is such that alfalfa
will make one more crop than it will
in almost any other part of the north
west. Everything can be raised here
from the Oregon peach to the south
ern watermelon. All that is needed is
water In the dry season.
Shall we have It?
It Is up to the land owners.

WITH OR WITHOUT WATER
Th'e Grande Ronde valley is up
against the case hardened fact of Irri
gation. No longer can it .be post
poned until some future and during
the Interim of copious rain will drive
all Irrigation talk into silence. The
accept or reject the measure, as a
whole and If rejection occurs the peo
ple of this beautiful valley admit to
all the world they are not willing to
do their part toward enhancW, values
and making it the greatest place In
the northwest.
A kind , provident ha done
much for this. valley, but It a to bi
expected that the people will do some
thing. Providence cannot d- every
thing,' for the Lord helps those who
help themselves. He ha3 placed a
splendid bo!1 here for cultivation and
has given a rainfall that will usually
cause good crop production, hut be
haa done more, tn these' mountains
are natural basins suitable for the
conservation of surplus water, and it
la the duty of man to take advantage
of these natural conditions, especial
ly when the scheme Is so easy and
feasibe.
Without irrigation this valley will
go along as usual. People will be
come wealthy for the cr6ps each year
take care of that feature. Land val
ues may advance but not to any mark
ed extent, for the land buyer today
FALL RACES! WHY JfOTl
It would be a fine thing of this com
munity would unite in having a fall
race meet In La Grande. There are
many modern methods of entertain
ment, but really it Is hard to beat a
horBe race for pleasing all of the peo
ple. There is something about rac
ing that will never die.
The town of Wallowa is contem
plating a race meet and a gun club
shoot which will be a feature of fall
festivities for Wallowa county. En
forni win VinvB the county fair and
there will be horse racing and a gen
eral good time there. Over at Flora
a fair will be held in September and
arrangements have been made for
racing. Then why not have ' race
meet In La Grande?
It Is not necessary to try to attract
eastern horses, or even harness hors
es from off the big circuit, for there
are plenty of good horses from Walla
Walla to Boise which would be enter
ed if the purses were sufficient to jus
tify It. :
A good old fashioned race meet
would aid In enthusing this commun
ity fts few thlng3' could. It would
cause everyone to arrange for a few
days off to attend the mces and Wal
lowa county would furnish many peo
ple. - .' '. ':.
