FAMOUS Minstrels STARS 25 BAND AND ORCHESTRA DHL DM BRIDGE IS WRECKED Duluth, Mini., August 1 1. The steam er Troy, a freighter, collideJ with a span of the inter-state bridge today and pre cipitated it into the channel of either side of the center pier. Navigation to and from the upper har bor, .which is the most active portion of the head of the lakes, is blocked and it is impossible for even a tug to past. The traffic between Duluth and Superior is cut off. The Great Northern owns the bridge which is the longest draw span bridge in the world. Forty steamers in the upper harbor have been cut off from the lake. MAHARA'S MINSTRELS Carrying the latest creation of the famous scenic artists, Sosman & Landis, of Chicago, in the way of scenery, en trancing costumes to aid the efforts of 35 of the foremost colored stars, jvianara Brothers ought to be able to furnish two and a half hours of music, mirth and mel ody, odds and ends and oddities that would be acceptable to the gloomiest individual living. Mahara's Minstrels will appear at Steward's opera house, Monday night, August 13, giving that street parade at noon. Seats now on sale at Van Buren's SPRAY YOUR TREES SOW "Spraying apple trees about the fifteenth of August does nore good than all the spraying that can be done previous to this date" was a remark made by John E. Hough tnis morning. He has had much experience in dealing with apples and apple orchards and while in that bus iness he had opportunity to observe the best time of the year for taking methods to kill off the worms that spoil so much of the fruit. It has repeatedly been proven that at just about this time the third growth of worms for the season takes place and by killing them now many more are des troyed and there will be no chance for an other growth to ruin the fruit The Jus tice's statements are corporated by sev eral fruit growers of this valley. A tragic finish A watchman's neglect permitted a leak in the great North Sea dyke, which a child finger could have stopped, to be come a runinous break, devastating an entire province of Holland. In like man ner Kenneth Mclver. of Vai.ceboro, Me., permitted a little cold to go unnoticed until a traggic finish was only averted by Dr. King's New Discovery. He writes: "Three doctors gave me up to die of lung inftamation. caused by a neglected cold, but Dr. Kings New Discovery saved my life." PROVIDES TOR INSTITUTE New York appropriated $20,000 ar nually for the support of farmers' insti tute; Minnesota. $18,000; Wisconsin, $12 000: North Dakota, $6000; Montana. $4000; Idaho $1000; Oregon, $2,500; Washington, nothing. A little study of the above figures would lead one to believe the greater the leed a state has for institute work the larger the fund set' apart for the work by the state, which would be right and proper and is true to a certain extent though not entirely so. New York, with her great markets for all sorts of products, with her greatly di versified system of farming and her many farms of thin land that require all kinds of coaxing to induce it to produce crops, and witn her more dense rural popula tion, certainly needs and is well able to appropriate a much greater turn for this purpo ;e thanjtht less wealthy, mor j scarce, ly settled states of the northwest, but the difference looks too great. JIf New York can use such a sum to good advantage, which she no doubt can and and does, Oregon could certainly use a few thousand to good purpose. N. freight car was robbed between this place and Meacham at an early hour yesterday. It was one of the box cars attached to an east bound freight, and some hobboes who were put off at Meacham are suspicioned.
