Wellman & Compan ADAMS AVENUE ELEVEN ARRESTED YESTERDAY Yesterday was a banner day for the police court. That is. from a point of njmbers. Eleven drunks and vagrants weie rounded up. Out of trat number one paid his fine of ten dollars, and the rest were given five days of cleaning streets. However, four of that number this morning "Couldn't see the instruction for the dust", and are now eating two meals a day at the city Jail, and the menu is not an extensive one either, just bread and water. "Honorable" George Peter son, who yesterday ihformed the police authorities that screet work was below his dignity, this morning complained to Mar shal fVayburn that he was not feeling well. The thin diet and jail will soon loss its charms for him and it is expected that he will be piiking up cobble stones before Monday. S1 perintendent Stoner is working won ders on the streets and alleys with the squad of vagrants. Those of them who agree to work are taken to the restaur ants and given excellent meals everyday. ALMOST COMPLETED C. D. Goodnough this morning began the work of putting in place the new fire alarm and by this evening practically had it installed. The mechanism is located at the ba se of the fire bell tower and has a crank attachment so that when the alarm specifying the ward has been given the general fire alarm can be rung by simply turning the crank. Electricians are also at work stringing the wires and installing the electrical device by which telephone central will be enabled to ring the alarm bell. It is only a question of few days now untill the whole system will be completed. "La Grande is just taking up the propos.tion i of a gravity water system, bringing in a supply of pure water 30 miles from Beaver creek. It is an imrart-ant on the part of the Beet City. As it is now they are short of water and can only sprinkle about two hours a cay. conse quently the streets are dusty." LOCAL ITEMS ' Robert Eakin Jr.. left this morning for Union to be gone for the day. It is reported that Mrs. Oscar Crossen is very sick at her home near Ladd car yon. J. W. Wsldon expects to pull out with his thrashing machine. Monday to start on the McConnell farm" L. C. Smith, the bicycle repair man. is not working much today, on account of illness. Mrs. Lottie Dilchirst. f Wanetche Washington is visiting her mother Mrs. C. W. Preston this week. Mrs. F. D. Graves returned to her home in Meachem last evening after a brief visit at the T. N. Golithan home. Harry Fisher, an employee of the 0. R. Si N. at Kamela. is now laying off on ac count of injuries received by a fall while on duty at that place. A. B. Conley and wife returned this morning from Long Beach, where they have been for several weeks. Mr. Conley says he thinks the wheat yield will be a little lighter this year than last. The dance given at the Commercial Club last evening was a very successful affair. The music was good, the attend- ful time. Add Gilham and wife, and Rob. French and wife of Cove, came down today from a week's fishing on Beaver creek. They report having had lots of fun and some fishing. J. M. Bull expects to leave for Idaho points in a few days on a business trip. Mr. Bull has about 200 head of fine steers on the mountain range northeast of this city. The militia left last night as per sched ule. The Baker City company's car was on the same train. A special train carry ing the Idaho militia will pass through here this evening on its way to American lake. The cooked food sale being held today at Grandy Si Russel'.'s meat market by the ladies of the Methodist church will continue during the evening. Those who are hungry will do well to patronize this sale. John Johnson, a sub-contractor along the Wallowa extension of the 0. R. 4 N.. who has been in La Grande a few days visiting his family who reside here, left thismorning on the Elgin train to return to his work. Mrs. T. B. Johnso- is still unable to be out of bed as a result of the blood poison ing which she sustained last Thursday eveni.-g. The attack left her very weak and her physician thinks it will be some time before she fully recovers. 0. C. Edwards, agent for the Umatilla Indian reservation, is in the city today in the interest of the two Indians who claim they have a horse spotted here. The matter is being taken up with the proper officials and the horse will no doubt be turned over to the rightful owners. Henry Holmes, who was injured in the foot at the logging camp where the Grande Ronde Lumber Co. load their cars, is able to walk with the assistance of a cane. Mr. Holmes attempted to stop a runaway car. but when the car gained such speed that he found it was impossible to (jet it stopped he jumped off in some bushes and injured his right heel. Rev. Meredith has received word from G. G. Haley, secretary of the Conference, that a special car will be run for the ac comodation of the Ministers and their friends, who wish to attend the Confer ence at Idaho Falls. Aug. 23. The spec ial car will be attached at La Grande, to No. 6. which will leave at 6:45 p m. Aug. 21. and arrive in Idaho Falls at 9:00 a m Aug. 22. E. Moore, who is attending the Tenth Annual meeting of the American Osteopathic Association at Put-in-Bay, Ohio, writes from that place to the Ob server: "We are having a fine time altho' it is rather warm but as it has rained every day we do not suffer. This is a grand place and the convention is a great suc cess, a huge crowd and more coming by every boat. We go from here to Chicago and then to Minneapolis for a week's rest at the lake. Both well and enjoying our selves but will be ready to return to La Grande after our vacation is over." WINDSTORM AT COVE A telephone message from Cove states that a wind storm did much damage to fruit and p.operty in that locality. The large window in the Methodist church was blown out and completely demolished. Several other windows were damaged to a considerable extent. W. R. C ATTENTION All members of the W.
