Yester day afternoon about four o'clock, a west bound freight was passing along the base of a high hill just beyond Northfork, when the engineer's attention was at- traded by a rumbling sound. Upon look ing back he was dumbfounded to see a avalanch tumbling down on his train. HIT CENTER OF , TRAT ' In an instant the small hill of dirt and rocks was on the train. Another minute and the freight would have been past, but fate had not so decreed. The terrible on slauget carried eight cars off the track and tumbled them into the ditch like so many toy wagons. COMPLETELY COVERED The engine was promptly brought to a standstill and the roll of the crew taken. No one was hurt. When the last of the slide had reached the bottom, eight cars wjsovered. ONE CASUALTY FEARED It was rumored that a tramp was steal- g his ride on the train and after a care- ul investigation it was found that if he ad been, he was in one of the covered cars. Up to a late hour tnis atternoon tne report had not been verified. TRAFFIC BLOCKED Passenger train number two, which was due shortly, was flagged and the passen gers forced to a long-wait. The wrecker which was sent from this city did not se cure a passage to let number two through this morning, and all other trains were necessarily delayed. Number one this morning went to Northfork to transfer mail and passengers. It will return this evening. The accident is another of fate's pecu liar freaks. The train, which was not a long one, was running at the ordinary rate of speed, and it can be plainly seen that a fraction of a n-.inute either sooner or later would have meant the loss of several lives. A severe jolt, however, was all the crew experienced. WRECKER SLOW It was nearly eleven last night before the wrecker reached the scene. THREE CARS Freight train No. 22 went in the ditch near Pleasant Valley yesterday. Three errs were wrecked. The wrecking crew left this placo about 1 o'clock for the scene of the accident. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time. STREET CARS (OLLIDE (Scrlpps News Association) Los Angeles, Cal, Aug. 13. Two elec tric cars of the Los Angeles and Redondo line crashed together in a head-on collis ion this morning on a curve just outside the city limits. The incomirg car was heavily loaded with people returning from the beach. The cars telescoped and sev enteen passengers injured, three of whom are very likely fatally hurt. COUNTY OFFICIALS SUICIDES (Scrlpps News Association) Goshen Ind. August 13 County Treas urer Drake killed himself this .morning. The trial of Ross Galbraith. who is charged with mur der in connection with the triple lynching some time ago, began here this morning. One hundred deputies surrounded the court house to prevent further trouble. Nine talismen qualified by noon. The spectators, consisting of men, women and children, hissed one juror who said he would be willing to let the law take its course in case his wife or daughter had been attacked by a negro. A FIRE IN SEATTLE (Observer Special) . Seattle. Aug. 13, 2:45 p m The Wash ngton building, a six story structure at the foot of Cherry street and First Ave., is a mass of flames. Occupants of the upper floors seem to be cut off from any possible means of escape. It is feared that many lives will be lost. The building is occupied by offices and stores. SETTLED (Scrlpps News A relation) Elpaso Texas. August 1 3 Two thous and employes of the mechanical depart ment on the Mexican Central railway went back to work this morning after a strike lasting nearly two weeks. In a meeting between the strikers and Presi dent Diaz, the president advised that where the Mexicans were equal to the Americans he would recommend that they receive equal wages. . As this was the reason for the strike, the men agreed to return. Freight business was almost to a stand still. WAS AN EXPOLSION (Scrlpps News Association) Terre Haute, Ind., Aug. 13 An explo sion occured at the Laflin-Rand Power Mill this morning causing much damage j and killing Frank Hamilton, a machinist. This is what the people of Green Castle heard this morning in regard to an earth quake. NATURALIZATION LAW (Scrlpps News Association) Rio Janeiro. August 13. The Pan American Congress today adopted the naturalization law which says that a man who is naturalized in one country and then moves to another and there takes up his intention of being a citizen can be re-naturalized in the original country, by one year's tesidence. Camp No. 7 on the Wallowa extension, which is about 12 miles below Elgin, wis the scene of two accidents yesteHay ; afternoon, both of which were occasioned by the storm. C. S. Perry, a civil engineer, was struck by lightning, and did not recover con sciousness until midnight. Mr. Perry has been an electrician, and in the course of that work has experienced many shocks from electricity, but he says yesterday's experience is all he wants from Nature's battery. He is resting easy and will make ( RIOTS DUE TO (Scrlpps News Association) New York, Aug. 13. Colonel Green today declared that New York speculat ors furnished the money to incite riots at Canar.ea, Mexico. The matter has been under a quiet investigation for weeks, and he declares that the scheme is a deliber ate attempt to depreciate property there. It is even thought that the recent riots which killed several Americans was in stigated by these moneyed men. EARTHQUAKE IN INDIANA (Scrlpps News Association) Green Castle. Ind., August 13. An earthquake was felt here at seven thirty this morning. No damage was done be yond a few cracked windows. : AAA MONET ! He will be laid up for several weeks. ' Both men were brought to La Grand and are at the Blue Mountain House where they are receiving every needed attention. It is reported that still another man was injured at one of the Wallowa extension camp?, but no definite information is pro curable. ; OffERS ITS (Scrlpps News Association) Chicago. III., Aug. 13. Railroad men have announced that they are willing to unearth transactions between the various roads and the Standard Oil. It is alleged that the immunity law i j the price thac federal authorities are paying for inform ation. It is understood that indictments against the Standard are all ready and will be returned when the jury meets on the twentieth of this month. fOUR BOYS KILLED (Scrlpps Newt Association) Elizabeth, N.
