Tha machina is of tha Gaar-Scott typa and Mr. Kaown expects to turn out considerably mora grain with it than with his other makes of threshers. His business will be slightly above tha aver age. On the banks of tha Grande Ronde last Sunday, for a mile above and below Elgin were more Issac Waltons than fish in the water. Tha slaughter was fearful, and many a poor fish latched hit good bye flop to life and freedom on this day. Republican! Tuesday was oay-dav amono tha auirar beet hands and a large amount of cash was scattered around among tha people who have been engaged in that sort of work. And right here it mav not he amiss to say a good word for tha sugar beet employers and tha benefit this in dustry is proving to be to the people of this town and valley. The sugar beet has made work at good prices for many of our people this summer and will continue to do so from year to year. It will be well to give the sugar company proper credit for the good being done in that line. The industry is certainly proving a big thing for the working people and for the vauey in general. IScoutJ The fires in the timber on Catherine creak are creating some uneasiness among owners or wooded lands within thair reach; MAY PARDON UPTON Governor Chamberain has under con sideration a petition for the pardon of George Upton, of Columbia county, who it serving a lift sentence for the killing of William DeJournette, in May, 1898. A commutation of the sentence has been recommended by Judge McBride. De Journette was killed during a drunken brawl, and Upton was found guilty of manslaughter. It teems that Judge Mc Bride has taken some interest in this par ticular case. A petition for the pardon of Upton was presented to Governor Geer in 1902, but no action was taken, and the matter was again brought up before the public by the recommendation of Judge McUride.
