was scattered around among tha people
who have been engaged in that sort of
work. And right here it mav not he
amiss to say a good word for tha sugar
beet employers and tha benefit this in
dustry is proving to be to the people of
this town and valley. The sugar beet has
made work at good prices for many of
our people this summer and will continue
to do so from year to year. It will be
well to give the sugar company proper
credit for the good being done in that line.
The industry is certainly proving a big
thing for the working people and for the

MAY PARDON UPTON
Governor Chamberain has under con
sideration a petition for the pardon of
George Upton, of Columbia county, who
it serving a lift sentence for the killing
of William DeJournette, in May, 1898. A
commutation of the sentence has been
recommended by Judge McBride. De
Journette was killed during a drunken
brawl, and Upton was found guilty of
manslaughter. It teems that Judge Mc
Bride has taken some interest in this par
ticular case. A petition for the pardon
of Upton was presented to Governor Geer
in 1902, but no action was taken, and the
matter was again brought up before the
public by the recommendation of Judge
McUride. Pendleton Tribune.
