J! I 1 I NO CONSOLIDATION St. Helens Fvor but Houtton Opposes 1 .....imAklie CTDCWTU Will Oregon Go Dry t the Next Opportonity? The annual scbo 1 meetiug of District No. 2 took place t the school i ousc on Monday evening ami wo quite larsi'ly attended. , Mrs. V. B. IMIlard was chosen director Cor a trm of three year ami II. I Wat kins was re-elected school clerk. The uelion ot consolidating with district No. 29 was then takeu up and mrnrsilv but Kxxl naturculy discussed, trona arguments, being advanced both. for and against the proposition. Dr. CliB led the omxwition to the measure and expressed the opinion that St. Helens, as a rapidly growm com noo.1 school build Ing ol its own, was in a position to man age its own school affairs and that the lmililinir of a new structure at a point midway between the two towns would TMult in ?nit inconvenience, especially for the smaller chidren, without confer ring any adequate compensation Mr. H. P. Watkins spoke along the same lines anil several others followed. Principal Allen favored consolidation on tht eronnd that it would give better school facilities, as, in a larger school, teachers would be able to do better work in the different entiles and a les number of teachers would be able to handle a mater number of pupils. Dr PMn f. V. Quick. Martin White, and E. H. KUgg spoke briefly i favor of consolidation. 1 ne vote snoweu 19 for and 15 against the proposition. HOIXTON'S ACTION The Toters of school district No. SD (Houlton V at their meeting last Monday vpmn7 el tl A. N. Clark as school clerk for one year and Charles Graham as director for three years. Tlie nuestion of consolidation was de featcd by a vote of IS to 3. and the di rector ordered to call a special meeting for the purpose of considering the question of building a new school bouse. This probably settles the matter of con solidation for several years to come, but we predict that as the two communities build toward each other the necessity for school building between the river and the railroad will become more apparent each year. In the meantime we con gratulate Houlton upon its decision to build a new school house and hope the community will not have cause to regret its course on consolidation - RsUMElT At the school meeting held here Mon-' day afternoon L. R. Kutherford was elected director and T. J. Flippin clerk for the ensuing year. Messrs Kuther furd and Flippin are both mill men ami beavy property owner who will take proper interest in tht schools aod wel fare of the children. Mrs. E. E. Clark left on the Hassalo Tneidsv afternoon to attend the State convention of the Pythian Sisters being held at Portland this week. Editor Fry and wife retained from Portland Tuesday evening, where Mrs Fry and children have been viaiting with relatives during the past week. Mr. J. L. Bell, who has been visiting with relatives in Washington during the past month, returned home Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Thomas left for St. Paul, Minn., .last F'riday. Mr Thomas had gone there on several buai sees enterprises. Judira Blahchard relumed from Port land, where he went last week to attend the Masonic Convention. The city la now f urnUMng water to the various residents applying for the same, and Frank Prescott, the ippenu tendent, has bis hands full.
