FOB VICE-PRESIDENT QARRET A, HOBART, of New Jersey Prosperity will come only through tlx reinstatement of tha payroll, ud the payroll only by protection to American industries. THK history of the country from 1873 to 1893 is on record as being the moat prosperous period known to our peo ple. II not that history sufficient to commend the policy of the party which was at the head of the govern' ment during that timet Ths Bryan idea of government strikes at the workiugman from all di rections. Not satisfied with reducing him to the level of the paupers of Europe, they now impose a tax npon him to the amount of one sixth of his earnings to pay the expense of bring ing about nit ruin. A gentleman was here a few days aao who recently visited the Anaconda mining district in Montana. He said to a reporter that the Anaconda mine lie visited was the richest in that state and was one of the most extensive plants. Tlio manager of the mine, eyuieutly be lieving the gentleman was a free silver man, explained to him that in order for a man to obtain work in the mines of Montana he m tint agree to donate the price of one days work out of each j week to the Bryan campaign fund. Any laborer who declined to do this was summarily dismissed and his place filled by a man who whs willing to accede to the demand. The mana ger said, however, he did not think all their employes would vote for Bryan when it came time to make out their ballots, and that there was a chance that the state would go for McKinloy, although the mine operatives were re quired to promise to vote for Bryan. Here is a new phase of slavery. It is somewhat like the condition of the colonies prior to the revolution when the planters were forced to pay tribute to their oppressors across the water; when they were taxed to death that their masters might revel in luxury. Two Llvrts Saved. Mrs. Phoebe Thomas, of Junction Otty, Tils., wss tuld by her doctors she had con sumption aud that there was no hop for her, but two bottles of Dr. King's New Dis covery completely cured her, and sb says saved her life. Mr. Thomas Eggcrs, 139 Florida street. San Francisco, s tiered from a dreadlul cold, approaching, consumption, tried without result everything else, then bought one bottle of Dr. Ring's New Dis covery, and in two weeks was cured, lie Is naturally thankful. It is such results, of which these are samples, that prove the wonderful efficacy of this medicine In coughs and Onlds. Free trial bottles at Dr. Kdwin Unas' drug store. Electric Bitters is an excellent appetiser and aids digestion. Old people mid It just exactly what they need. 1'rlce fifty cents and $1.00 per bottle at Dr. Kdwlu Ross drug store. No obstacle should be placed in the way of any permanent improvement undertaken fay any citizen of SL Hel ena. It is business that we want, and it can be bad only by encouraging thoee who are willing to invest in bus iness ventures. The time has not yet arrived when St. Helens has too many business enterprises. Many of those men who went into the populist party .at the beginning, conscientiously believing in the princi ples advocated, are jpow left without a party, since the democrats have swal lowed up the organization root and branch. These men who were before republicans aod consequently protec tionists, may be expected to again sup port the republican ticket. Tax-K about great campaign funds! What's the matter with the Bryan campaign fund T One days work each Week for each man employed in the silver mines of this country, besides the hundreds of thousands of dollars subscribed by the mine owners and ofljce-hoMera. One mine owner alone is said to have contributed 1100,000 to .the demopopocratic campaign fond. Boodlel did you say? there's no end .of boodle in the Brvao sack. SSAl tOPUUST SC0N0MY. R. S. Hattan, whose career has, to some exteut, been published in these columns heretofore, and whom the people of the county, by their ballots, have three times in four years de clined to place in a public position, but at last, without their concent, has succeeded in muzxling the public "teat," nsed some space in the News of last week to vent his spite against the editors of Ths Mist because this paper called attention to the fact that the populists of this county had howled for economy before election, and had implied that their promises were not being kept. After bitting Mr. Schoon over a rap over the head Mr. Hattan says: "We are beginning to feel our selves equal to the emergency, and the howling of the disgruntled sheet, Ths Oregon Mist, will indicate our suc cess. Our books are open (and so was the county jail last Friday) at all times for investigation, etc." Bat Mr. Hattan does not tell his populist friends that Thb Mist offered to print the tax list for just one-fourth the amount now beiug charged. This was not the kind of economy he was looking for. Characteristic of bis ilk he seeks to mislead rather than en lighten, though what be may say has little weight outside the narrow limit of a circle of his kind, hence space de vote to him is that much free adver lUing of a poor article. COLOMBIA COUNTY'S SEMI-ANNUAL FINANCIAL SHOWING diving the Clerk, Sheriff and Treasurer's Report For the Six Months End ing September 30, 1896. FWfclueof POTATDtS-Eocnyeaf Wi have had a few years of experi ments and as many years of un pleas ' ant experience ; now, let us go back to .that bappy condition in 1892. and re new the policy which brought pros pejity to every citizen who was willing o apply bis energy in behalf of htm self and those dependent - npon him Experience has, indeed, been a dear lesson to the people of the United States, and the sooner the record of the past four years is blotted out the sooner will the American homes be .made Jiappy and prosperous. Rrv. Barclay, who is stumping tbe Stat for Bryan, said in a speech at .Kalama the other day that be was in Chicago during the strike of 1893 and that the rioters were in the right. Here is an open defense of the thugs and tonglis who were burning railroad buildings snd rolling stock, occasion ally killing or crippling employes, and otherwise violating the federal law. In this connection is where tbe Bryan xlatform declares for anarchy and in cendiarism in denouncing the federal uthroite for putting down tbe riot, and those who speak in advocacy of dsryan a election proclaim it from tbe stump. How any man who believes in federal authority and law and order can support or associate with men who make such declarations as the .above Is hard to understand. There have been coined by the United States in ths one hundred and six years since tbe mints were opened, Ailjzv.iDi silver dollars, all of which are a full legal tender today. Of tbis number, 423,289,219 have been coined ince the "crime of 1873," so called, and only 8,031.238 were coined before that date. Wherein, then, was silver .demonetized by the "crime of 1873f -Where is the consistency of a man who bowls for the coinage of more silver and in the same breath de nounces the very acts of 1873-8, under tne provisions of which fifty three times as many silver dollars were coined in the twenty-three years from 1873 to 1896 aa had been coined in the history of the country before. These are figures from the treasury depart ment wmcb any citizen can obtain. The creating of more money under iree trade will not furnish labor for our workingmen, without which they cannot earn money with which to buy the products of our farms and factor ies. Protection has never closed tbe doors of a shop, put out a furnace fire or drove a single workman into tbe ' street. Our industries must be in op eration or ws are reduced to poverty, and tbe creating of more money alone is not tbe remedy. We must have protection under which our logging camps, our mills and our factories can be put in operation. And ths way the issues axe lined np tbis year this con dition can only be brought about by tbe rspubliean party. No juggling with words will change the historical foots of toe past. Designing politi cians may attempt to warp history, but the record stands eat prominently, Iit "h. who runs may md." j ten rwa ih less ILJI ,5.qgrmjegrBici j MfPyrroos JOOverogcferBuijKl e ant r 1 m n ntua iir sa.. a.
