M a k e ti a began making music very early in her life, for her. the songs of protest and dissidence made life in the townships of South Africa boa robin At 20 years nl age Makrtia was i boson to lx1 the lead singer of the land Manhattan Brother, and from there tier career look off. Makeba was hailed us an incredi ble songstress and she traveled the world, how ever. in 1960 when Makeba returned home to attend her mother's funeral, she was denied entrance into South Africa From that moment on she was in exile To punish her further for tier departure all of her records were banned in South Africa after she testified before the United Nations Special Committee Against Apartheid In 1968 Makeba once ugnin found herself exiled, only this time it was from the United States when her marriage to Americ an radical Stokely Carmichael ended Her appearamee urn canceled and her recording (outran revoked She moved to Guinea and started over Makoba's comeback began on the Paul Simon's 1987 Graceland tour, during tins time she returned to the United States and /.imlmbwe The following year Makeba published her autobiogra ..MAKEBA WHEN: Fodov. Masekela said of his homec uining tour I'veii though there is still much to do in Smith Africa as far as reforms Masekela wrote of his toy at the change in South Africa in the album notes of his latest release. Cirone. throne is a percussionist with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and a professor of percussion at San lose State University. .VInd ent Drummer has named Cirone "liest classical percussionist" for five years consecutively. In addition to teaching and performing Cirone is also a world- renowned composer, who has earned his master's degree from The juilliard School. Cirone is a protege of Saul Goodman and has been principal solo timpanist with the New York Philharmon ic for the past years, he has performed all over the United States and Europe, and in Japan.
