Mango Re« ords samples some of Salif Keita’s songs from 1978 to I99T Because of the Cuban influ ences in Malian popular music of the 1970s. much of Keita's music has a distinctly Latin sound not only in his singing but in the close harmonies of the horn parts. "Mandjou," a song from the 1978 alburn of the same name, is one of the more I-utin mflueni ed songs on the retrosptx tive album Keita's swoops and turns of his vocal melody are very Latin sounding. mxornpanied by a syn copated bass line and elec trie organ, trumpet and gutter solos At \2 minutes, the song allows the musicians to explore and develop the musical ideas in their solos, meaning the song, though long, is not boring and has a constant sense of forward motion. In 1984, Keita moved to the outskirts of Paris, where tradi tional African music was begin ning to merge with Western musical technology, and he began exploring the use of syn thesizers and other electronic instruments in his music Sometimes tills goes a little too far, as on "Sanni Kegniha,'' pro duced in 1987 and taken from his dehut album. Cuban influences and synthesizers remain, but the musical sounds and elements are more balanced One regret with this retro spin live is that Mango did not publish any lyrics to his songs, translated into English or other wise. Even though the liner notes say his songs are about "everyday life, with its trials, tribulations and lessons." it would have been nice to read and understand his words While Kintn's combination of Malian and Western music resulted in a less engineered, more folklike sound, Angelique Kidjo's now album, Aye seems to takes more inspiration from Western dance music, funk and hip-hop. Kidjo has a powerful voice, which soars on gentle waltz-like ballads, like "Idje Idje," and growls on songs like "Houng liati." which is about poverty and homelessness. But this album's strengths lie in songs like Lon Lon Vadjro," which showcases Kidjo's versa tile voice backed by tight horn Turn to REVIEWS, Page 8A Searching for Our Oldest Ancestors A Lecture with Dr. Donald Monday, April 18th, 8:00 pm, at the Halt Center!
