I k , ' ?;, '! : J Salf Distributed For Big Game In Eastern Oregon The spring salting operations on big game ranges by Oregon State Game Commission district agents is nearing completion. Be tween ten and eleven tons of salt are being distributed this season over the ranges of Eastern and Southwestern Oregon. The salt, in fifty pound blocks, is being set out by the use of aeroplane, pick up trucks and pack horses. All salting stations being set out have been approved by the Forest Service or other land ad ministrative departments; This is done so that the work will not interfere with established stock salting programs. The Game Commission con ducts its salting operations for several purposes. In some places. it provides necessary minerals to big game diets. By the location of these stations it is also possi ble at times to induce earlier mi grations of big game from prob lem winter ranges and make for a more uniform use of forage on crowded summer and winter ranges. By encouraging a more widespread use of range in this manner game and livestock com petition can be reduced. In some instances it is also possible to lessen game damage to crops by drawing the animals away from the nroblem areas. In the coastal sections of the state some small experimental salting stations are being oper ated, although, so far it has been difficult to get big game animals to use the salt in this part of the state. Robert Mace, chief biologist for big game, stated that salt is proving to be a relatively inex pensive but very effective man agement tool for big game animals. Select them with care. Garden specialists of the U. S. Department of Agriculture say it is better to have a few, simple, light weight but substantial tools than to buy many pieces of poorly designed equipment made of cheap or low grade materials. Work in a small garden calls for a shove) or spading fork with a long handle, a steel bow rake, a 7-Inch common hoe with socket handle fitting, a strong cord for laying off rows, nnd enough gar den hose to reach all parts of the plot. In transplanting, a trowel Is useful but not essential. If the soil is properly prepared, plants can be set out more easily with the hands alone than with a trowel. In a garden larger than 2,000 square feet, the home gardener will find a sturdy wheel hoe worthwhile. It can be used for most work done with a common hoe and with much less effort. The single wheel type Is probably the easiest to handle although some gardeners prefer other use ful styles. Tools will last longer and do better work if they are keot clean and bright. After each Use, they should be thoroughly cleaned and wiped with an oiled rag to prevent rusting. Hand hoes as well as wheeled implements should be kept sharp for doing good work with little effort. Auto Parts Store Opens at Sutherlin SUTHERLIN Wesley 'Curley' Thompson has opened his new store in the east half of the Holgate Building. It is to be known as Sutherlin Auto Sup ply and will be stocked with a complete line of auto parts and accessories. Thompson and his family come from Cottage Grove where he has been in business for several years. They will have temporary quarters in the rear of the build ing. Thompson is a graduate of Su therlin High School at 1923. For two years, 1930-32, he oierated the Union Oil service station in this city and then went to Kose burg for a short while, where he was employed by the Unifcn Oil company in that city.
