Well, we can laugh at that sort of character because from where I sit, Americans are just the op posite. We like to boast a bit per- s haps, about the paint job on the new barn, or the .missus' style of cooking but we aren't intolerant of people who don't think or act exactly the same way we do. In our town, for instance: Some folks like band concerts, others don't some families serve beer with dinner, others, buttermilk and as for politics, there's plenty of healthy disagreement. But when it comes to denying folks the right to think or act as they choose . .'. no, we're like you we don't belve in it, whether it goes for serving beer, or speaking one's mind on public afTairs. Copyright, t?$8, United States Brewers Foundation Need for Power Brings Support For Draft Plan ' By JAMES THRASHER As things look now we are going to have selective service without universal military train ing. At least a leading House Republican says that his branch of Congress has made up its mind and that the majority would prefer no draft at all to the Senate-proposed combination of draft and UMT. This decision seems to be the result of politics, urgency, honest conviction and honest doubt. The opposition to UMT has been main ly political. It has put some of the most conservative congress men in the company of Henry Wallace and the Communists and, under ordinary circumstan ces, most of those congressmen would rather be found dead than In such company. Phone 373-J-1 found quite a number of clergy men and educators in its ranks, along with a good many mothers. So the men who really hold the reins in the House have bottled up the UMT bill even if it meant playing me pariy-une game iu do so. Two Reasons Cited Whv. then, does a limited draft bill find so much support? It is more drastic in that it requires two years continuous service, n will take wage earners and some married men and college students. It will start inductions at 19, which doesn't sidestep all the-ob-jections to UMT's accent on youth. , There seem to be two principal reasons. And in all fairness the non-political one should be put first. Since the passage the of ERP legislation, the tempo of congressional activity has stepped up. Threatening events in Eu rope seemed to convince all but the most reluctant members that it was time to strengthen our selves, as well as our neighbors across the .Atlantic. The Marshall Plan was a bold step which enabled the United States, for the first time, to take the intiative against advancing Communism. But bold diplomacy needs some strength behind it at least the minimum strength that military leaders say we re quire in a peaceful world. So. many congressmen who not long ago were quibDling over the cost of European aid now seem eager to vote even more appro priations. And in this mood, it is understandable that they see the need of providing the man power to fit the appropriations. Many Exemptions On the political side, the draft touches far fewer families than universal training, or some mod ification of it. would do. There are so many exemptions and de ferments as to make one wonder u there may be enough men eligible to provide the 600-odd thousand additions that the House bill specifies. Yet those exemptions and deferments are probably just and necessary as regards military service not military training in time of peace. That leaves unanswered the question of training a large body Of reserves. Some of our wisest citizens insist that in this unset tled world, our youth should be eiven military fundamentals lor their own protection as well as lor the counrty s. UMT opponents apparently are willing to gamble, in votes, that such training is not needed, and that, in the space ol two years, war will either be upon us or the threat of war will be dispel led. That is a debateable view of the future. But at least we need a draft to get our armed forces up to par, ano tne goon pros pect that we shall get It is en couraging. Korea's First Vote Costs 500 Lives SEOUL, May 12. (Pl The first free election In this 4,000- year old nation cost nearly 500 lives. . The 200 national assemblymen they elected will set up Koreas ursi democratic government. Counting of ballots for nearly 1,000 candidates proceeded tedi ously. It may be several days be- lore all results are Known. A postelection calm, and an apathy, settled over South Korea almost immediately after the polls closed. Surprisingly, the Koreans who had voted so heavily in defiance of Communist threats, showed little Interest or perhaps it was great patience in the tabulation. U. S. occupation authorities said the violence was Communist in spiredfrom Soviet dominated North Korea, which flatly refused a United Nations invitation to par ticinate in the ballot. Pre-election violence, intended to friehtcn Koreans away from registration booths, had cost 384 lives in lu weeKs.
