' THREf Society and Clubs By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER WEDDING PARTY AND OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS ENTERTAINED HERE i Feted were the group of out-of-town guests who were bridal attendants of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. A. Wilhclm, Jr., (Willa Metta l.ogsdon) whose wedding was one of the season's prominent events within . St. Joseph's Catholic ' church and celebrated Saturday afternoon. On Friday evening following the wedding rehearsal, the bridal altendants, namely, Miss Pearl Homing of Plattsburg, New York; Miss Marie Gage of Eu gene, Oregon; Miss Katie Gil christ, of Klamath Falls, Ore.; Mrs. Velva Trivelpiece, of Yreka, Calif., and Mrs. Eunice Evans, of Portland; Bill Murphy, of Junc i tions City, Ore.; Tom Evans, of Portland; Howard Trivelpiece, of Yreka, Calif.; Verne Mouton, of Eugene, and Howard Speer, of Junction City, were entertained l a dinner party and dance in Carl's tavern. Other guests for the evening wore Miss Lelah Weberg and Mr. and Mrs. Oren Ledgerwood .s of Myrtle Creek; Miss Mabel Weber, of Maupin; Miss Lillian Logsdon and Edward Radigan. On Saturday noon the bridal party was entertained by a din ner at the Umpqua hotel. Me mentos at the guests' places and surrounding the floral-centered table were doll replicas of the wedding party. Other guests for the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. George Wil helm, Sr., and Miss Mary Wil hclm of Junction City and the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Logsdon. BRIDAL SHOWER GIVEN MRS. MARL LILES AT SINCLAIR HOME Mrs. Robert Sinclair entertain' ed at a charming bridal shower party this week at her home at 545 Fowler street in compliment to Mrs. Marl Liles, nee Jessie Blake. Bouquets of sweetpeas were beautifully arranged about the rooms. Bingo was played during the social hour, after which love ly gifts were presented to Mrs. Liles from Mrs. Grover Blake, mother of the guest of honor, Winnie Travis, Beulah Maynard, Mrs. V. V. Harpham, Mrs. T. G. Havens, Sr., Mrs. Frcida Stein haur, Mrs. C. W. Dishman, Miss Emma Lou Dishman, Mrs. Clyde Kiske, Mrs. Floy Liles, Mrs. Ken neth Ellison, Mrs. Feme Fauth eree, Florence Morris and the hostess, Mrs. Sinclair. Lovely refreshments were serv ed, following the opening of the gifts. INFORMAL LUNCHEON ENJOYED AT UMPQUA HOTEL ON WEDNESDAY Mrs. Leo Young, nee Ethola Kinney, who is here visiting her uncle and aunt, Dr. and Mrs. 1). B. Bubar, entertained at a charming informal luncheon Wednesday at the Hotel Umpqua in compliment to her cousin, Miss Gay Bubar, Miss Frances Wimberly, and Mrs. Albert C. Miller. Miss Bubar will become the bride of Larry Watson, of Eu gene, in this city Sunday, June 29; Miss Wimberly will marry Robert James Healy, of Patter son, New Jersey, Wednesday, July 9, and Mrs. Miller, nee Adah Marie Ruhl, became the bride of Albert C. Miller, of Porterville, at Carson City, Nevada, on June 17. Mrs. Young and son, Ronald Dean, will remain here for the Bubar Watson wedding before re turning to Salem. COUNCIL MEMBER9 HONORED AT DESSERT SUPPER PARTY MONDAY Mrs. Clifford E. Smith, new president of the Junior Woman's club, entertained the council members at a charming eight o' clock dessert-supper Monday ev ening at her home on Cobb street. Covers were placed for Mrs. Perry Thiele, Mrs. Norman Hess, Mrs. J. E. Henbest, Miss Patricia Turner, Miss Dorothy Crummett and the hostess, Mrs. Smith- Sweet William, sweet peas and tall lighted tapers were used to carry out a pretty motif for the occasion. Plans were made for a cooked food sale and for a benefit dance, dates of which will be announc ed later. INFORMAL LUNCHEON ENJOYED SATURDAY AT J. C. HUME HOME Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hume and daughter, Miss Joanne, enter tained as their guests at a very lovely noon luncheon Saturday at their attractive home on Blakeley street: Dr. and Mrs. George N. Lommcr, of Spooner. Thrills and Adventure of the Big Top DAVID SMITH, JR., RECEIVES SPECIAL AWARD IN LOS ANGELES SATURDAY Josef Hofmann, world famous pianist, presented David Smith, Jr., with a special award June 21, 1941, in Los Angeles, where David was proclaimed the most promising young pianist of the century. . Deanna Durbin was presented with an award for being the most promising young singer of the films, Jeanette McDonald for the best woman's voice, Nelson Eddy for the best man's voice, and Allen Jones for the most popular singer. All artists re ceived their awards in person at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles. Due to Illness of Josef Hofmann his son, Anton, made the follow ing presentation remarks to David: "It Is indeed a great honor to place into your competent pianls tic hands this treasured auto graphed first edition copy of my father's Golden Jubilee Concert I hope that you will honor me with one of your Golden Jubilee programs which, I am sure, will he another milestone in musical history." David and his mother, Mrs. David Smith, will arrive in Rose burg June 30, where David will spend the remainder of his va cation. He plans to return to Cincin nati, Ohio, September 1 to con tinue his musical studies at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. MRS. She was graduated from Oregon Satte college In the class of 1941 and was honored for her excep tional higli scholastic standing and for her many accomplish ments during her four years of college life. Miss Ruth and Miss Ruby Mat thews, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Matthews, were hon ored at a charming party on their nineteenth birthday anniversary Friday evening, when Mrs. Max Myers, assisted by her daughter, Miss Alice, and Mrs. O. O. Mat thews, entertained a group of friends at the Myers home. Beautiful bouquets of summer flowers were attractively arrang ed about the rooms. Gifts were presented to the two guests of SUNSHINE CLUB HAS ENJOYABLE MEETrNG THURSDAY AFTERNOON On Thursday afternoon, the North Side Sunshine club was entertained" by Mrs. Mary Prin cen. A short business meeting was held. In the absence of both president and vice-president, the meeting was conducted by Mrs. Patsy Fisher.. At this meeting a new member was voted into the club. ROTAR I AN S ENTERTAIN LADIES AT DINNER- j DANCE ON THURSDAY The Rotarians entertained their ladies at a very delightful . dinner-dance Thursday evening it the Riversdalc grange hall. The dinner was served by the la dies of the grange. Three long tables, decorated with large bowls of red, white and blue flowers with matching patriotic favors, carried out a pretty motif for the occasion. Covers were placed for sixty-five. Harris Ellsworth acted as master of ceremonies for the oc casion and the evening marked the close of V. J. Micelll's presi dency of the club and the in coming of the new president, Charles Emery. Two quiz contests were enjoy ed and prizes were awarded to winners, after which Mrs. Frances Llntott and W. E. Ott furnished the music for the old fashioned square dances and At torney Dexter Rice, first presi dent of the club, was voted "champeen" square dancer. C. W. Wharton did the calling for the square dances. Mrs. Golda Cleo Blount, of Portland, who Is a professional entertainer, delighted the mem bers and guests by presenting a charming original reading, "Spring Shopping" and respond ed to an encore by giving "Break fast Table Scene." Mrs. Blount and her two sons, returned to Portland Friday, following a two weeks' stay here visiting her sis ter, Mrs. J. D. Myers.
