THE PROPORTION FOR ADVERTISING. The Publishers Auxiliary gives a table showing whet pro portion of a concern's gross receipts, in the opinion of 10 of the test retail advertising men in the country, should be set aside for : advertising. These figures suggested that amounts varying from 3 i per cent in the case of department stores, four per cent .for millinery and miscellaneous stores, five per cent for men's t.iness is equal in importance to any other function of that con j'cern. A factory may be producing with a high degree of oi . ficiency. But if it has no system for selling that product, the chances are very strong that it will be difficult for it to dispose of the same. The public will not be familiar with the merit of I material for her gown. A fringe of . .. ... .... ! sea.weed would h mil,. kj.nmin' its product, and will probably pass it by in favor of something 'that is pushed more energetically. Manufacturing concerns as :a rule have a systematic method for selling their product. As the majority of them sell to a trade covering a wide territory, such concerns must depend largely on salesmen and on advertising ;;on a state or nation wide scale. Retail stores are not called up on for such costly advertising, since they can usually find news i papers in their own field that cover quite thoroughly the terri-;-tory from which they expect to draw trade. But if they will : take a lesson from manufacturing methods, they will get the "idea that their business is made much more hopeful arid prom ; Rising, if they will regard advertising as an absolutely essential ..expense, and devote a reasonable proportion of their gross re , -ceipts to this purpose. i: o After spending a couple of days at the state legislature, sea weed would be quite becomin but if simplicity is the desired ef fect we would urge the lady to take scissors and cut little slits around the edge of the dress. A rosette made from pleated gunny-sack adds just the proper touch of refine ment for the occasion. Hip pockets are also be in' worn this season and should be quite popular during the inaugural session in Washington, 0.
