The Southern Pn eltle Hallway, with a thoummd men at work, Is building through this point a one hundred and lllty mile extension of Its Klamath L.'.kes line from Klumath Kails to Odell, whence It will swing around over I he Cascade Kange, joining Its main Hue again at Natron, In Western Oregon, by what is called the Natron cut-off. "Odell seems to be destined to beeome a future railway center of great importance. In addition to buvlng tint Hill Oregon Trunk Lino and tho llarriman Hoot hern Tactile and Deschutes line, the Oregon Short Line has obtained right of way to It acrosH Southern Oregon from Ontario to Coos May, and will build to it by tho time tho rival roads get to It. "Mr. Hill's Idea of getting so far away from home by his rival line as Klamath KalM Is yet to be explained hy blm. Klamath Fulls Ih peculiarly a llarriman railway town, completely Invested by tho Southern Pacific. When IiIh rival line Is complete Mr. Hill can carry freight and passengers north to the Northern I'acillc, but what will bo do with those going south to Kan Francisco? Will be turn them over to his good frlemU, the llarriman Hues? lie has pro jected the Itolse and Western Hall- road, an east and west line across the center of Oregon from Itolse, Idaho, to bis Oregon Trunk Line, via Iturns. As matters now stand, it Is asserted, all of his tralllc not destined for Portland or for the Kast bv bis Northern I'acillc and Ureal Northern lines must be turned over to bis rivals ultimately at lvlamulb Falls." Murshlleld Times. WASHINGTON, June 21. The millionaire colony of the Senate, some of the members of which own stock In railroad, fought desperately to kill every physical valuation amendment proposed, In the new railroad bill Just passed. A physical valuation would expose to the country the extent to which railroad stocks have been watered, and would, therefore, tend to pre vent over-capitulizatlim In the future and pave tho way for reasonable freight and passenger rates. 1 nis Is why the railroads fear it. 'he Interstate Commerce Commis sion, pariiHuu Republican In make-up, has recommended physical valuation yeur after year. "The Commission bus, In previous reports, expressed the opinion that It would bo wise for Congress to make provision for a physicul valuation of railroad prop erties, and desires to reafllrm In this report Its confidence In the wisdom of such a meusure." Physical valuation was recom mended hy Koosevelt time and time again. This Is at least one Roose velt policy that Mr. Tuft has deserted cold-bloodedly. The President has raised neither voice nor pen on ho half of physical valuation. Yet tho Supreme Court, in Hie Ne- branka rate case, held that "the busts of nil calculations us to (bo reuson uhleness of rates must be the fair value or the property being used for the convenience of tho public." As tho interstate Commerce Commission does not know the value or a single railroad, It must tlx reasonable rates by sheer guesswork. Hut when It is considered tiiat Harrlmun contributed Jiiti'J.OiM) to Hie Hepublicun campaign fuud on be half of the railroads, that probably numerous other railroad magnates advanced equally large sums, and that the very bill Congress is uhout to nlaco u non the statute books was originally drawn In New York and Rtibiuitted to the railroad interests before being Introduced to Congress, it Is not so strange that physknl valuation amendments received their death stabs even after passed by a goodly majority In the House of Representatives. Ripley of the Santa Fe railroad, in an Interview with a correspondent, discussing rate regu Intlon. "The rale regulation bill Is the first step presaging that result. Ripley said he believed the bill wiv.lM V iut'T l-id ell the IntthlMvi of i he lioverumenl lor the purchase of the railroads as an economic ne cessity. He would not estimate Ih amount of money that would be re quired, declaring that If the railroads were asked to make an estimate iney would place the value of their prop erties considerably higher than their total capitalization. "The railroads believe that under the new laws the ,w inment can force Ihein to operate at a loss," Rip ley replied. The disposition r f uhout 30 ships which huvo beep made practically obsolete us model n fighting ships by the rapid development In tho con struction of naval vessels nnd the increased efficiency of the more re cent guns, has confronted the navy department with a perplexing ques tion. The July number or Popular Mechanics offers the following Inter esting solution: "The use of n few of the vessels as training ships will uudobledly dispose of some of them, but that helps only u little. The suggestion which sounds the most practical of uny is the ultl zutlon of the most powerful ships as forts, stationing some of them in the approaches of Important harbors, and planting others nt convenient resting places such as small islands, nt the mouths of harbors. Where no such places ure available It has been pro posed to construct small Islands around them." The article is illustrated. F.RICE Real Estate Agent TRUTH No 4 1 We have cast that invisible force, invisible iron-filings so though the force is still invisible.we now know its shape It is due you to know how the enormous supply of California Crude Oil is disposed of. As an example, one railroad within the State uses TWENTY-FIVE PER CENT of the pro duct for mechanical purposes and fuel, while two other lines consume as much more divided between them. About 30 per cent more is consumed by other industries, leaving about TVVENIY PER CENT ONLY for the purposes of refining, and a large proportion of this latter amount goes into the manufacture of asphalt. And the market still increases. It is only a question of time until oil will take the place of coal, as it is a cheaper fuel, cleaner, aud easier handled. The chef prepares each dish in Us proper order and has It ready and waiting o a tray. When the host and tils guests are seated at the table, tho former touches a button and an electrically operated tray ar rives through a trap door in the top of the table. When closed, this trap looks like two ordinary silver covers on tho table. Hy pressing another button, the tray, with Its dish, is carried around the central portion of the table. As the dish arrives In front of each guest, the host touches a third button which stops It while the giiesL is helping himself. The dish passes all around the table In this way, and then, on again pressing the first button, it disappears through the table and returns to the kitchen.
