OLD SAMTA CLAUS IOE8 ELEPTRICITV KILL? Una been working overtime at our store lately. 1 1 6 has been favoring us with a good share of his business, The Tact Is that ever since we opened u 1 our first Christmas stock In Kose liurg two yeurs ago the old man has come to us when he wanted some thing real nice for his good friends. Wo appreciate this and so ench year wo get a better line from which he can make his selections, and he uses more of our goods. He Is nearly tickled to death this year at the line wo have fixed for him. He thinks our store is the "besteBt ever" place to get Christinas gifts. That's what wo always try to make our store. We furnish the right goods at the right prices but always good. Santa Clnus snys that Is the reason he IlkeB to buy his gifts of Kxpcrliuiut Will be Made on MuroVr- er After Execution. rr-7- ... ike.vion, M. J., Dec. is. jonn MantaBsanna, of Essex county, to to have a novel Christmas gift, if the newest project inspired by Jersey Jus tice fs successful. John is alleged to have committed a murder, and Just for that he Is un der sentence to.be electrocuted at the state prison next week. But Dr. Frank bcammel, county physician. and Dr. Thomas MacKenile, prison 1 physician, harbor doubts as to whether electrocution really sends the victim to that bourne from which no man returneth. Therefore, If per mission can be secured and John doesn't get a stay, they will try to resuscitate him after he has been duly executed. The experiment will be undertak en In order to prove or disprove the theory oi scientists that the Inflic tion of capital punishment by elec tricity only stuns the victims, who are later killed by the surgeon's knife during the autopsy or by the quicklime in which the bodies of murdorers are burled. At all previous executions of sen tences the autopsies have been per formed by Dr. rj. A. H. Hpltzka, or Philadelphia. Next time, however. Dr. Scanimal, the county physician. will insist on being allowed to take posesslon of the body. With the as sistance of Dr. MacKenzle, he will then apply all the methods of resus citation known to medical science. If the experiment fails an autopBy will be performed to determine the exact effect of the electric current on the human body. It Is also ex pected that this will show If death wob Instantaneous, aB advocates of the electric chair aver to be the case. "Dr. Gibbons, of New York, has asserted that electricity does not kill a convict, and that the men put In the chair die under the surgeon's knife in the autopsy or In the quick lime In which they are - burled," County Physician Scammell said In discussing the project. "In Intend to find out whether that Is true, and I have Invited Dr. MacKenzle to as sist me following the next execution of the death sentence in the state prison here." If the two physicians should suc ceed In resuscitating Mantassanna. or any other convict, a nice legal ques tion will be raised. Officially he will be declared dead before the current Ib turned off. Therefore he will have paid full penalty for his crime, and if he be restored to consciousness he cannot be subjected to the current again. There are many persons here, J including omciais, wno say tne state will not permit the county physician to carry out his proposed experiment. ti 1 I 1 A I T 1 S A I I -.
