mice are becoming npest in that re
gion. To destroy these pests people former
ly resorted to asphyxiation by filling
the burrows with smoke or to drovni
injj by pouring water into them or to
sowing poison nbovtt the fields. The
latter method proved dangerous lo do
me.iticnted animals.
At the present day another method
is used, infection by a microbe which
Is deadly to r.it3 and mice only. In

ease. He collected virus, made cul
tures and nssured himself that these
cultures produced" the disease In
healthy ruts aud mice. These experi

the experts. This method of destruc
tion has been recently commenced and
carried out systematically on a surface
of 2,800 acres.
Tho French parliament nppropriated
203,000 francs to be used for the de
struction of the mice by virus.
Tree Gum Undo by Dacterlu.
The uonehciul effects of bacteria are
no less interesting than the part they
play in tho propagation of disease,
and a recent discovery Is that the vege
table gums found on trees, such as
gum limbic, are the results of their
activity. Previous to some investiga
tions by Dr. S. Greig Smith of New
South Wales it was believed that vege
table gums were the result of the un
healthy or pathological conditions of
the trees on which they were formed,
but the entire subject was one about
which comparatively little was known.
Dr. Smith, believing that bacteria pro
duced the gum, examined two trees
from which it exuded and obtained,
two varieties of bacteria, of which ho
made cultures.

pitchblende which was taken from the
ground ns long ngo as 1S07, and
1853, and the strength nnd quality of
the radium in these samples have been
found to be Identical with those in a
portion of pitchblende only newly ex
tracted, n fjict which further provea

diminution with time.
