An alarm was sounded, but the blaze was extinguished while the firemen were eoroute to the scene." Mr. W. A. Reid, of Alaska, will lec ture at the Christian church this eve ning, Feb. 13. The lecture will be il lustrated by 200 colored stereopticon views ot Alaska and biograpb motion pictures. All are cordially invited. Time, 8 o'clock. Admission free. Col lection taken at close for the extension of the Y. M. C. A. work in Alaska. Excavation began today for the foundation of the brick building to be erected by A. C. Marsters, on the plot of ground near corner of Jackson and Cass streets. The building will be 60x100 feet, occupying the north 40 feet of the plot adjoining 20 feet now occupied by the wooden building in which Jennings' bakery is located., That structure is to be removed at once. Pending completion of the new building, Mr. Jennings will suspend business. When he resumes in the new quarters, he will add to bts bakery a full line of confectionery and a soda fountain. Schaffcr and attached to a wagon loaded with shingles, took a breakneck spin down Jackson street Saturday afternoon, starting in front of the Hoover building and stopping in the Johnson Lumber Co's yard in Kinney addition. A new wheel will cover all the damage done. The annual meeting of the stockhold ers of the Douglas Co. Agricultural So ciety which waB scheduled for Saturday afternoon, was postponed until March 4, there not being enough stock repre sented to transact business. There should be a more general interest in this matter and the County or District Fair at Roseburg made a regular feature every year. It would be a good thing for Douglas county. Will V, Todd, who was stopped at Grants Pass by the authorities last Saturday to be brought back to Hose burg to answer a complaint hied by his father in the justice court, charg ing him with leaving behind $80.50 in unpaid debts, has been released at Grants Pass and is now enroute to Ne braska with his family. As Sheriff McClallen was about to depart on the train for Grants Pasa Saturday even ing to bring Todd to Roseburg, the man's father withdrew his complaint and paid all the necessary costs. M. Brown is engaged in Investigating the case ot Nelson Elsea, the old man who was found dead near the cabin on his home stead near Comstock, on the 20th of last January. W. H. Miller, ot Cot tage Grove, who also owns a homestead near Comstock, 1b held in jail here charged with poisoning Elsea, the com plaint being sworn to by Elsea's widow. Arsenic or strychnine is believed to have been placed in the coffee pot out of which Elsea had drank on the day be was found dead. Examination of the coffee grounds failed to disclose any evidence of poison, but Mrs. Elsea, not satisfied, had the stomach of the de ceased removed for analysis, the result of which has not yet been announced.
