3 THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN School Celebrates 86th Birthday On Friday, February 25, :two assembly programs were presented by studenti body to celebrate Chemawa’s 86th birthday. Then the students went over to the dining hall and received a piece of Chema wa’s birthday cake and punch. The participants in the program were the school band, both begin ning and advantage chorus, “The Barter Trio,” Alice Agiak, Eve Soplu, and Jane Akootchook; the “Nomads,” John Hensley, Teddy McGlashan, Victor Lebanoff, and Jack Aleck. Thè Indian Club con cluded thè program with some of their cultural dances, both Navajo and Alaskan. That evening, the student coun cil sponsored a dance for the stu dent body in honor of Chemawa’s birthday. There were three hun dred students ,who participated. The king and queen were crown ed by the superintendent, Mr. Walters. Chemawa’s 86th birthday queen was Helen Young, a junior, and the king was Carrole Levsha- koff, from the sophomore class. Other king,and queen candidates were Michael Schaeffer and-Helen Ramondos from the senior class, Gary Hoffman, junior class, JoAnn Boskofsky sophomore class, Carol Inga and Eugene Borokofsky fresh man class, Wilbur Begay and Irene Billy, eighth grade. The Queen and King led the grand march, Mr. Wolfe furnished the organ music. The Indian club sponsored the dance and every one enjoyed themselves. Stanley Begay ARTIST VISITS CAMPUS A Navajo Indian, Artist from Flagstaff, Arizona, Chester Kahn, came to Chemawa for a visit. Our superintendent Mr. Walters was his principal when he was at Steward, Nevada. Kahn made a speech in the Audi torium. He spoke to the Indian Heritage Club, about one of the Indian problems today. He told us that Indians live in a small world of their; own, many Indians have a hard time, but they are used to if. Each of us has an individual responsibility to improve ourselves and get an education. It is up to each person to contribute what they can to the culture of the world. The world wants to know about the American Indian, and we must be proud to be Indians. Linda Boyd Grad Returns and Plays Piano A Chemawa graduate returned to the campus and gave of his mu sical talents as an expression of gratitude for what Chemawa had done for him. Mr. William DePoe Class of 1934 who performs under the stage name of “Witt DePoe” spent March 1, entertaining the study hall groups with his talents at the piano. Mr. DePoe has a wide back ground of experience in the enter tainment field, having played with Lawrence Welk, Bob Crosby, Dor sey Brothers, and other top hands. He has also played night clubs, television shows, and performed in four movies including “Elvis Pres ley at the World’s Fair.” Instruments which he plays in clude! piano, organ, saxophone, clarinet, accordion, banjo, and man dolin.
