CHEMAWA, OREGON, JANUARY, 1966 Juniors Present Beef Stew A teacher who cracks down on the football hero just before the crucial game of the season, coupled with the frantic attempts of every one involved to salvage the day, make Beef Stew a real comedy hit with high school students. The first attempt at class plays by Chemawa School in a goodly number of years is under the di rection of Mrs. Mary Kay Randall, teacher. Much work needs to be done in the preparation of sets and lighting as well as the directing of the play, but conditions look favor able toward having a real smash hit on our hands. Cast for the play includes: Victor E. Lekanof, Joyce Quijancfe^ Maxim Buterin, George Kudrin, Thecla Wasuli, Stella Becenti, Wassie Was- sillie, Gladys Wells, Abe Wilson, Mark Hiratsuka, Marlene Fred, Donna Morrison, and Susan Buter in. Holiday Buffet Enjoyed by All A new approach to serving holi day meals has met with rousing enthusiasm from the student body. On Christmas Day the dining hall will be open from 12 noon until 4:00 P.M. During that time students may come in and eat as many times as they like. The meals are served Buffet style, with the student helping themselves to liberal portions of whatever food strikes their fancy. The Christmas menu includes; baked ham with raisin sauce, roast turkey with dressing, mashed po tatoes and giblet gravy, candied sweet potatoes, buttered corn, tossed salad with dressing, hot rolls and butter, apple and cherry pie, m ilk or coffee, assorted fresh fruits, and cranberry sauce. Students will eat at the tables by candlelight and soft Christmas mu sic will be played. This type of dinner is new with Chemawans. It was tried at Thanks giving time and met with great enthusiasm. A generous thanks to Mr. Douglas for giving us some thing new and different. STUDENTS ENJOY FIRST SNOW On December 13, we got out of bed and looked out upon a cold frosty world. About noon it began to snow and everyone was happy. Some of the boys were running abound outside to ^welcome the snow. Others who were afraid of getting cold just stood and looked out the window. By evening it had stopped snow ing and had started to melt. The next day the sun came out and it was all gone. Boy, that is the fast est winter I have ever seen. Levi Lott An introduction to the .world of work, was the theme for one of the finest field, trips that the stu-; dents of Chemawa have ever ex perienced. Leaving Chemawa on October 16, and returning to cam pus on the evening of the 23. Fifty, students, mostly seniors, spent an action packed, experience filled, week in San Jose, and Oakland, California. Leaving Chemawa by charter bus we students and the chaperones journeyed to Redding, California for the first overnight stop. From there we traveled to San Jose, where w e. were the guests of the Employment Assistant Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. While in the Bay Area we were given brief instructions of how to take care ourselves in a big city. We stayed in hotels and daily cash was given to each student with which to buy their meals. If a student spent all his money on one thing before the day is over, he went hungry for the rest of the day. We were oriented on how to use the Employment Assistance Office and what to expect when we finish high school. We had the opportu nity to visit some Junior Colleges and trade and vocational schools. We also visited industries and assembly plants. There were many fine housing and recreational places. We even found a little time for recreation and the theatre. In Oakland we did some more of the same, and toured the Alemeda Air Base and the city of San Fran cisco. Boy! were we tired, but it was a wonderful experience and none of us will be as frightened of the big city when we finish high school.
