2 THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN TFifi Closes Basketball Season Chemawa High School’s cagers closed the basketball season on the strength of three straight wins. The Braves downed Saint Paul 75-63, avenging an earlier 61-59 loss at the hands of the Bucaroos; scalped the MacLaren Hawks, 75-39; and added the final feather ot the war bonnet by knocking off Oregon State School for Deaf, 70-48. Head coach Martin Vogler, in his first year at Chemawa, felt this was a fine season, although his cage squad enjoyed only a 5-7 Mar ion “B” League record in the Ma jor Division. However, this did net the Braves undisputed possession of fourth place in the league. Chemawa enjoyed a little more success outside the league, moving to a 9-1 record. The Braves finished the season with a 14-8 record. Despite the loss of several key players, Chemawa netted nine wins out of their last thirteen games*. The Braves will miss fine perform ances of Dennison Begay and Jef- fory George next year, as both ended their careers as Chemawa basketball players, with good hus tle against O. S. S. D. Begay hit the nets for 20 points, as George came up with 12 points. George led the point production for the remaining players, scoring 264 points for a 12.5 game average. Wilbur Begay, who did not finish the season, topped all scorers with 292 counters, for a 14.6 game aver age. Harry Y. Begay and D. Begay were next with 224 points and 181 points, for a 10.2 and 9.1 average, respectively. Varsity letterman for the season include, George H. Y. Begay, D. Be gay, Kee John, Harry Begay, David Galakationoff, Charles Sakeagak, Clifford Davis and James Chokwak. Returning letterman to next year’s squad will be H. Y. Begay, Sakea gak, John and H. Begay. In ad dition to these boys, Chemawa will have the services of Kee Wilson, Tom Katoney, Herman James, Jimmy Charley, John Leavitt, Det- lef Wulf and Alvin Edenshaw. Wil son and Katoney, both up from the junior varsity, played some good basketball for the varsity this year. Ed Bartlett’s junior varsity en joyed aonther fine season, finish ing with a 21-1 record. Salem Acad emy stoped the little Braves’ win ning streak at 38 wins in a row, as the jayvees compiled a 21-0 record for the ’64-’65 season. Bartlett’s J. V. cagers are now 42-1 for two years. Track Star Gets Mention In Statewide Listing The many hours spent in train ing has been reflected in the per7 formance record of one of Chema- wa’s capable cinder men. Stanley Begay, a senior track star for the Braves, has received word that he has been selected on the basis of his record in compe tition to be ranked in Who’s Who in Oregon Track and Field 1965. From the information submitted by the Oregon High School Coach es performers were ranked accord ing to time and distance. The twenty-five top performers in each division are listed in the booklet.
