THE CHEMA WA AMERICAN Chemawa Wins Grade School Tourney 3 - HOMEMAKING - BABY CARE CLASS STARTED 'ROUND AND 'BOUT Supt. Hallie Walters presenting trophies to A and B team captains. A group of Chemawa’s students (30* boys undeoT4 ' years of age) were invited to participate in a basketball tournament at Linfield College on March 6 and 7. They had a “B” (under 13) Tournament and an “A ” (under 14) Tournament. Our boys from Mitchell Hall and a hand full of Brewer Hall boys made up our two teams. The boys had fun and all took part in the games. To top this, they also won both tournaments and brought back-two very beautiful trophies. Congratulations to them and Mr. Oosterveen, the recreation leader. Boys who took part in the games: “A ” team, Harry Y. Begay, Jim mie Charlie, John Sharkey, John son Yazzie; Lee Spencer, Alvin Ed- enshaw, Dickie Hosi/eeri, Albert James, Phillip Tsaipi, Jimmy Slim, David Morgan Chee, and Steven Arizona. “B” team, Kee Wilson;;/Alfred Begay, Harry Begay,Tommy Begay, Wilbur Begay, Larry Dish, Floyd Onesalt, Paul Tsosie, Curtis John son, McDonald Boyd, Tom Pete, Phillip Nez, Louis Brown, and Wil fred Ben. Managers; Kee Babbitt, Albert Harris, and Kee John. ALUMNI NEWS Olga Muktoyuk and Rex King ston were married January 18, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Portland. Olga has just completed her AVT training. Mr. and Mrs’ Kingston are living in Portland at present. Congratulations. Johnny Duncan is attending Edi son Vocational School in Seattle. Bernice Mason recently called from San Francisco where she is employed in ä hospital. She would We welcome two new Alaska girls, Alberta Capsul and Kathryn Goomzer . . . they are getting used to this liquid snow . . . LaVerna Gray, Lucy Littlesalt, Mary Roan- horse; Betty Grandson, Etta Billie, Eva Benally, Ruth Nez. and Ella Yellowshirt are trying their wings on O JT. . . Bunny is off the cigarettes . . . she doesn’t want to get cancer . . . but is wondering how to kick the Instant Coffee hab it now. . . We drear the Mitchell boys have patented a quick way to dust the stairs . . . just slide down the bannister with a rag in each hand. . . The Winona Fish Farm is getting so productive the girls are wondering about opening a can nery'. . or Susie wonders if canned guppies could ever take the place of salmon. . . and who was the boy who tackled the cow in the fog out on the football field? . . .H e real ly wasn’t trying to play football with a cow . he just couldn’t see on account of the fog . . . Maybe jie should take up bull fighting . . . and then there’s the girl who was so entranced watching Commission er Nash eat his breakfast that she forgot to eat her own . . . Notice the “new look” the benches give the campus . . . We wonder why the ones on the boys’ side are turned to face Winona Hall . . . is the view better? . . . Some of the girls wonder about the “Beatle” hair styles some of the boys seem to be wearing . . . One young lady warns “We girls don’t like them 8 . . be civilized . . . on the Beatles it’s OK on you it’s . . . ugh. . / ’’• ; The Gabber. . . NOTICE: Hand in your com- comments. . . like to hear from former class mates. Elsie Gonnie who works in Port land was a recent visitor at Winona Hall. The 10B, IOC and 9A girls have started their class in Mother-Baby Care at the Chemawa Clinic. Mrs. Leona Nopp, a registered nurSe, is the instructor. Thé course prepares girls to be better babysitters and future parents. Martha Moore HOME NURSING PRACTICAL CARE The Home Nursing class stresses the use of household items in the care of a patient, as: making tables, trays, back rests, foot rests out of card board boxes .Changing sheets and giving a bed bath require much skill. Of great interest is the many things about a home which can be put to use in the care of a sick person. Cecelia Joseph VARIETY GIVES SPICE TO HOME EC In case someone thinks the Home Ec girls spend all their time eating and giving parties, read my story. For instance, my class has taken a grocery; field trip, shopped for sewing materials, made fruit cakes, planned and prepared a vari ety of meals, made clothing, grooming, Child Care and Home Nursing. We also presented an as sembly. Margaret Bereskin DENTAL TECHNICIAN TRAINING STARTED Phyllis Young and Diana Shorty have been training as dental assist ants, under the direction of Dr. Carr, since school started.- Some of the things learned are: cleaning steriling instruments, setting up amalgam fillings,, silicate set-ups, mixing medications and reporting on patient cards. This is a growing field of work for young women. Diana Shorty AG CLUB HOSTS TOASTMASTERS January 23, the staff and students of the Ag Club were hosts to the Dallas Toastmasters Club. A staff of girls from Home Ec served and helped prepare the dinner. After the dinner a short program was presented. The boys enjoyed meet ing the men of this club.
