Students Celebrate Orthodox Christmas ACTIVITIES: "Y" SWIM PARTIES Two Sundays each month fifty boys and girls, go to the Salem YWCA. We have an hour swim in the pool then play games for an hour. At the end of the game hour there are refreshments and some times a little program of entertain ment. One game I like is when we make a big circle- Everybody walks as the music plays. Every so often boys take 4 steps to the center and girls 4 steps out and change partr hers. This is like a big square dance. After refreshments we clean up so we leave thè kitchen and lounge clean for the next group. We came back to the campus a little tired, but happy and with excitement in our eyes. Robert Arthur Most of us thought that the Christmas Season had ended. But on the night of January 7, sounds of; carols were heard on the camp us, as the Orthodox students cele brated their Christmas. The girls spent many days; decorating the Christmas Star and practicing the songs. Then on the evening of Jan uary 7, the carolers assembled and one of the boys, carrying the star they went about the Campus sing ing their songs. This was greatly enjoyed and appreciated by the other students. CHOIR PARTY AT YMCA During February the C h o i r (church) had a party at the YMCA. Leaving the campus at 6:30 p.m. the group arrived at the Y at 7 p.m. After an hour of get-acquaint ed games, those who wished had an hour swim. For those who couldn’t swim . . . they watched wishfully. After the swim, the group sang songs and en joyed refreshments befoie return ing to the campus. The party was resplendent. Our thanks to Rev. Stevens and his committee for giv ing us this happy evening. - Maggie Pete - Dorcas Rock VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT Last month the girls recreation groups played out their volleyball tournaments. McBride Hall and Wi nona Hall had their tournaments. The winning teams from each of these dormitories then played for the championship. The team from McBride Hall won the champion ship and were given the trophy. Marion Rock McBride teams captained by Em ma Cayaditto and Esther Hirotsuah played off a tie. Emma Cayaditto’s team won the McBride champion ship. The following girls were on the team: Emma Cayaditto, Phyllis Yazzie, Grace Sampson, Helen Mar- tin, Digna Willie, Lilly Teller, Lo lita Kay, Amy Bennally. Orthodox Carolers and Christmas Star. GIRLS START DRIVER TRAINING The 9th and 10th. grade girls are taking driver training under the direction of Mr. Burright. They all hope to qualify for driver licenses. It is amazing what is necessary to know to drive a vehicle. Not only are there the city and state regula t i o n s as to speed, stops and starts signaling but also the ability to do many things at the same time. Cecelia Joseph WINONA HOUSE COUNCIL ELECTED SOPHOMORE GUIDANCE MEETS Each semester the girls elect new unit leaders, who make up the House Council. New leaders to serve during the second semester are: Maggie Pete, Dianna Shorty, A r l e n e Garner, Mary Bennet, Gladys Wells, Lucille Killbear, Don- ita Kanosh, Joann Nelson. The as sistant leaders are: Florence Mitch ell, Stella Becentj, Evelyn Mc Laughlin, Effie Curley, Rena Nez, Lorena Mills, Marlene Fred and Alice Shields. The new president of the House Council is Dianna Shorty; vice president, Florence Mitchell; secre tary, Arlene Garner; and treasurer, Joann Nelson. Mrs. Pentecost is sponsor. Lorena Mills This year the 10th grade students have had the. opportunity to meet once each month as a department group and once each month the groups are combined. Mr. Wright and Mrs. Pentecost and student committees have planned a very helpful program. Special guest speakers have been: Mr. Walters, s u p e r intendent; Mrs. Brannon, principal; and Mr. Fredrickson^ guidance department head. These meetings are especially helpful to students in understanding require ments for college as well as other types of work, as: selecting a voca tion; college entrance; loans and scholarships; needs for education; vocational school.
