THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN WINONA HALL Grace One, Reporter The annual Christmas Arts and Crafts sale was held in Winona Hall December 2nd. The shops and girls’ guidance arts and crafts pro gram participated. There were many articles on sale, such as: metal work, anchors, metal boxes, Christmas cards, cutting boards, stools and many other things from the shops. The girls sold: native dolls, wall hangings, tote bags, beadwork, Christmas devorations, drawings and paintings, cross stitch aprons and towels. Refreshments were served in the Winona dining room. The estimated number attending the sale was three hundred from nearby communities. Three guests were from Massachusetts. Others were from Woodburn, Mt. Angel, Silverton, Salem, Mill City, Eugene, and Corvallis. Many orders were left to be mailed out. The girls cleared about $100 and the boys about $50. We students enjoy put ting on this annual sale. It is fun meeting people. * * * Mrs. Odie Bingham and Mrs. Charlene Lane resigned. They were aides at Winona Hall. Mrs. Rose Faulkner transferred from the din ing hall to Winona Hall. Our new weather shelter or play- shed has been completed. Mrs. Long and Mr. Oosterveen took twenty-five girls and boys car- olding around the campus on Sun day night, December 23rd. The car olers went in to each dorm then went to the residences of the em ployees. Mr. and Mrs. Walters, Mrs. Johnston, Mr. and Mrs. Penrod, and Mrs. Brannon passed candy and cookies. After the singing the group went to Winona Hall to enjoy warm coffee and cookies, a treat from Mrs. Long and Mr. Oosterveen. All the girls in Winona Hall dec orated the dorm with many beauti ful decorations. Many mobiles were hanging in the halls and rooms. The mobiles were made from chick en wire, straws and dowels. A bus ride to Keizer, the capitol and Icel Court was enjoyed by many of the girls. The rides were taken Saturday and Sunday eve nings to see the Christmas decora tions at these places. Last Thursday night Mrs. Long began teaching us girls some new exercises. Many of us were stiff the next day. We will soon be practic ing for the Posture parade which will be held February 7th. McBride and Winona Hall girls had the playoffs for the volleyball tournament. Winona’s best team won over McBride’s best team by three points. The games were well played and there was lots of excite ment. McBRIDE HALL Elaine Hoslscher, Reporter Painters are in McBride Hall painting the rooms. The rooms are all pretty colors. We are all anxious to use the rooms again. All the girls in McBride Hall are drinking milk and doing exercises. How can we reduce? McBride Hall was all decorated for Christmas. It looked real nice. The girls waited for days for Christ mas to come. The rooms with the best decorations were to get prizes. I guess that all the rooms were so nicely decorated that no prizes were given. Jobs Daughters came to McBride Hall on December 22, and decorat ed our big Christmas tree. Girls that were in the Club helped them to decorate the tree. The girls brought some presents for each girl in McBride. The presents were put under the tree and on December 25th all the girls went to the living room and each took a present. Everyone had a good time on Christmas Day in McBride Hall. The playshed at McBride has been finished, so now we can play outside in the rain. * * * Mrs. Frances Turner is our new matron in McBride Hall. Mrs. Turn er likes it here in Chemawa. She is from _ McMinnville, Oregon. She said that she has never worked with Navajos or Alaskans before; Mrs. McMurtry is our new Teach er Guidance at McBride Hall. Mrs. McMurtry has worked with Navajo people in Shiprock, New Mexico, before coming to Chemawa. Her son goes to Judson Junior High in Salem. BREWER HALL CHRISTMAS PARTY On December 23rd Brewer Hall had a Christmas party. We invited our girl friends to the party. We danced at the party. We had refreshments. The boys did the serving. We served the girls cookies and punch. John Alexie MITCHELL HALL Tommy Shorty, Reporter In Mitchell Hall the boys really stressed themselves forward for Christmas. They decorated their rooms as well as the halls and play rooms. They were on the ball be cause the supervisors said that the best decorated unit should deserve a Christmas party. If you looked at the building you would know that the whole building would get a party. * * * On the 23rd of December the House Council had their party in the living room in the lower north end of the building. The boys invited girls and they really had fun. They danced, played games and listened to records. Mrs. Connor sponsored the party with the help of some of the unit leaders. We had sandwiches, cook ieS, fried bread and candy for re freshments. Then each one had a sack of candy and peanuts as a special treat. - We thank Mrs. Adison for mak ing the fried bread for us. * * * In our dormitory new desk lamps have been put in the students’ rooms to make the rooms look nice and give a good light. Rugs were also given out to the rooms so they Will look nicer. McNARY HALL On Monday evening we boys all went to the auditorium for a Christ mas program. After we got back to the dormitpry we got our gifts and candy. Then the best decorated fooms; received prizes. There were two of them. All of us boys really had a nice time. The McNary Hall Staff and all the boys hope that you had a nice Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year! Anderson James, Reporter McNARY MEETING Last Sunday we had a building meeting. The president opened the meeting and then called oh Mr. Matt. He talked to us about our rooms, details and tribal clothes. He said that some of our rooms look nice and said that we should all keep our rooms neat all the time. He told us to take good care of
