'7 7 '5 VOLUME 59 OREGON STATE L'ROAPY CHEMAWA, OREGON, MARCH, 1963 Students Commemorate Birthday The annual program comemorat ing the eighty-three years of con tinual operation of the Chemawa Indian School was held in the ■school auditorium February 27, 28 and March 1, 1963. This year's cast under the direc tion of Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Be gay featured Nina Frankson, Betty Jean Begay, Monica Usugan ,Lucy James, Mae Hawley, Joan Ayuluk, Helen M artin, Dora Nayamin, Ver onica Stone, Elaine Hoelscher, Elsie Oktoyak, Florence Olson, Nancy Yazzie, Elouise John, Irene Living ston Laberta Swartz, Sarah Yazzie, Irene Nelson as our fair Indian maids. ; y: Steven Arizona, Stanley Begay, Eugene Woody, Stanley Dehiya, Tommy Shorty, James Dale, Rich ard Charley, Roy Tom, John Rich ards, Wilson Chavez, James Benal ly, Donald Johnson, Phillip Henry, Raymond Yazzie, Bobby Tullie, E rn est Johnson, and Herman Lee as In dian braves. Doing an outstanding job as sing ers and drummers Were Johnson G. Begay and James F. Yazzie. Twenty-five numbers were in the total program which was composed of Southwest, Northwest, Plains, and F ar North dances and chants. A grand finale at each performance was followed by th e taking of many pictures. The entire cast was honored by being photographed and shown to the people of Oregon and Washing to n in three television broadcasts besides much newspaper coverage. A week prior to the pageant, the cast was presented, to the fifty-sec ond Oregon Legislative Assembly where they met many Oregon Sen ators, Representatives and other of ficials. The cast was invited to tour the? Capitol and had the pleasure of dancing in the Governor’s office and in the two Houses. The school is indebted tp the many o th e r stu dents and staff members who help ed make the eighty-third birthday program a grand success. Sinka Littlefish VALENTINE PARTY On Valentine’s Day the girls from Mrs. Hudson’s class had a party in home economics class. Our teacher let us make sugar cookies and punch. We had a good time. Lucy Evan. NUMBER 3 JAPANESE VISITORS On January. 15th, the Japanese champion high school w restlers vis ited Chemawa campus. They visited our classroom. We showed them on the map where we lived. We told them how our folks make a living. That evening these Japanese boys were going to w restle,w ith some boys from North Salem, South Sa lem and Silverton high schools. David Belone. n i
