4 THE SHOP'S ALL SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PARTY The Cog-Wheel Club gave an all school Christmas party on Decem ber 14th. The decorations were pretty. There were lots of colored lights, a Christmas tree, Christmas balls, finsel, streamers and a big mock fireplace with Santa and his reindeers. During the games, Santa came in and played with us. The dance music was furnished by Tommy Kizziah and his orches tra. Refreshments were served in the all purpose room. The games and dancing were in the gym. The decorations were taken down and given to the buildings who had asked for them. All the decorations bought by the Cogwheel Club were given to the school. During the dance intermission Simeon Arnakin, president of Ex plorer Post 123, and who had been appointed Junior Assistant Scout Master of Chemawa, was awarded the Insignia of the position by Sup erintendent Walters. Tommy Agiak MANAGERS AND WHAT THEY DO The managers for the varsity team are Robert Joe, Ben Charley, Benny Largo, Kee Begay and my self. Robert Joe and Ben Charley are managers for the basketballs and Bennie and I take care of the equip ment. Kee Begay is the first-aid equipment manager. Before the games we have to get all the equip ment ready so we don’t have to rush when the game starts. When the players get out on the floor we just relax after all that noise; We think we have a good team and we like to be the managers for them. Ira Isaac CHRISTMAS AT WINONA The evening of December 24th, at 7:30, all the students of Che mawa were in the auditorium to see the program that was put on by some of the students. After the program we all went back to our dormitories. As we went into Wi nona Hall one by one the matrons gave us each a bag of candy. Finally our gifts come. One of my gifts was so heavy that it made me wonder what it was. I rushed into my room and unwrapped it and guess what I found? I had been given the biggest sugar daddy that could be found in Oregon. So you see I had a sweet Christmas. Loberta Swartz THE GHEMAWA AMERICAN FAREWELL Mrs. Elsie Holman, clerk in the academic department, resigned from her job October 31st. Mrs. Holman has been at Chemawa three and one-half years. She said that this was the most interesting job that she had ever had. Mr. and Mrs. Holman have plan ned a five month trip to Mexico. Then they will return to their home in Oregon. Grace One NEW PLACEMENT OFFICER A new placement officer has been selected for our school. He is Mr. Marshall. A placement officer is a very important person. He helps prepare us for our jobs, finds jobs for us and helps us when we have problems on the job. I know Mr. Marshall will do the best he can to help us on our jobs. David Belone GATB TEST On November 16th the girls from our class took the GATB tests in Salem. There were six of us tak ing the test. Some of the other Chemawa stu dents have taken the tests already. There will be others to take the tests later. I hope that we do very well on these tests and show that we have learned a lot in our special train ing. I will try to do my best on the test. Della Mae Northway RECREATION PROGRAM Chemawa has a good recreation program for boys. The program tries to provide activities for all Students to take part in. It teaches the students new kinds of games. It teaches acceptable social stand ards and regulations. The program tries to train students to be good student leaders. This year’s recreation intramural program tries to interest students in competition among classrooms^ Each event has so many points value for the top five teams. This gives the students something to work for. After all the events have been played, the points will be added for each classroom and the one having the most points will be the intramural champion and will receive a prize. Ira Isaac AWARDS PRESENTED As part of the Department of In terior Incentive Awards Program, Superintendent Hallie Walters pre sented the following awards: Twen ty year emblem pins and length’ of-service certificates to Miss Vel ma Ackels, clerk, and Miss Jewel Plumlee, teach-elementary. Ten year pins and certificates to Mrs. Sadie Begay, Instructional Aide, guidance; Mrs. Florence Ku- bin, teacher, Home Economics; Mrs. Pearl Carlson, clerk (stenographer); Mr. Marion Marshall, Placement Of ficer; Mrs. Helen Castillo, Instruc tional Aide; Mrs. Laura Williams, teacher, elementary; Mr. Joseph Camillo, cqrpenter. A certificate of Superior Per formance Award and a check for $200 to Miss Mary Mitchell, Assis tance Department Head, Guidance. PAINTERS! Last Thursday Paul and I were trying to use the spray gun. We were going to paint the new paint shop. Something was wrong with the spray gun and it wouldn’t work. We started fixing it and found out something was in the hose so we cleaned it out and then we could use it. This morning we were two hap py painters. Pete Walter WE SHARE OUR CULTURE October 30, Jane Greist and I went to Salem to visit the Soropto- mist Club. We talked about our Alaskan and Navajo way of life. It was a pleasure to meet the women and let them know about us. Diana Shorty In November, a group of us went to church in Salem to sing, tell what we do at home and visit. The students making the trip were Arthur Ahkinga, Diana Shorty, Henry Barber, Harriet Baldwin, Roselyn Larkin, Fanny Moses, Mos es Aiexie, Levi Lott and I. After the program, we had refreshments. Jane Greist December 10, a group of 21 stu dents went to St. Timothy’s, an Episcopal church in Salem, to give a program about the different ways we, the Navajo and Alaskan stu dents, celebrate Christmas at home. It was fun and we really got the Christmas spirit planning the pro gram. Jane Lind
