Coach Sanders and fourteen men boarded th e train at Chem aw a early T h u rsd ay m orning, a r r iv ing at G oldendale shortly after noon. Both team s averaged about th e sam e in w eight. T h o u g h th e field was wet and soggy th e gam e was fast and our team com pleted several forw ard passes for long gains. L ouis Colby also got aw ay and bro u g h t th e spectators to th eir feet by a 40-yard ru n on a criss-cross play. E arly in the second q u arter N uckolls com pleted two p retty passes th at gained 20 y ard s each and brought the ball w ithin the L eg io n ’s one-yard line. C hoate carried th e ball across th e chalk lin e in the n ex t rush and kicked goal for the first score. T h e first half ended 7 to 0. But for two sh o rt passes th e second half was held entirely to stra ig h t football. In th e third and fourth q u a rte rs C hem aw a started to rush the ball from the 20-yard line on the kick-off and steady, determ ined line bucks and off-end ru n s, grad u ally carried the ball to the G oldendale goal line. Each tim e C hoate p lu n g ed across th e last m ark for a touchdow n and booted the ball betw een th e posts. W ith only th ree m inu tes to play in the last period Chem aw a carried the ball to the center of the field on the kick-off. Tw o rush es placed the ball on the L e g io n ’s 12-yard line and the w histle blew, ending th e gam e 21 to 0. T h e gam e was hard fo ught and every point earned. A lth o u g h the G oldendale team was unable at any tim e to advance the ball against the strong, stubborn defense of the Chem aw a team they m anaged to hold th e ball for four dow ns and p u n t 40 to 45 yards, th e re by k eeping the score dow n. T h e offensive and defensive w ork of our line and back field was splendid and p retty to see and won the adm iratio n of m any spectators. Salem high and Corvallis high are considered the best high school team s in the sta te. In fact Salem is fighting for the state ch a m p i onship. B ut th e “ H o tsh o ts” have proven too m uch for Salem , h an d in g them two defeats. T h ey also handed a 13 to 0 defeat to C orvallis on T u rk ey D ay. A lthough the contest was played in a sea of m ud th e gam e was ex citin g and m any spectacular plays m ade. T h e first score of the gam e was m ade late in the second q u arte r w hen B ettles, the scrappy little q u arterb ack , h urled a forw ard pass 35 y ard s into Jo h n so n ’s o u tstretched arm s, w ho tro tte d ten yards across the goal line. Bettles kicked goal. In th e th ird period B ettles ran 40 yards for th e second touchdow n. H is team mates form ed perfect interference and foiled every m a n ’s attem p t to get the ru n n e r. B uchert also excited the crowd in th e final period w hen he dashed off left end and th ro u g h th e backfield for 45 yards only to be dow ned by th e safety. T h e gam es ended 13 to 0. T h e “ H o tsh o ts” tu rn ed in the suits M onday sa tis fied w ith th e te a m ’s victories. T h ey batted a thousand. Played th ree and won three gam es, and rolled up 40 points to th eir o p p o n en ts’ 1?. A CA D EM IC NO TES T h e gardeners have ju st finished d ig g in g th e p o ta toes in the west field. T h e freshies will soon review th e ir geography and g et ready for m id-year exam s. T h e senior class are m aking p retty w h ite dresses for D and E com panies of W inona H all. Joseph Devlin is one of the b rig h test stu d e n ts of th e freshm an class this year. So far he has lead th e class in every subject. T h e greater part oi th e freshm an girls are detailed to the sew ing room this detail, but take som e lessons in the dom estic science also. M atilda L aderoute was prom oted to th e seventh grad e rece n tly . She is g ettin g on to th e w ork in fine shape. T h e Seniors now register daily the num ber of hours or m in utes they p u t in stu d y in g each subject. It is g o in g to be a g reat help in show ing th e value of ta k in g ad vantage of every m inute.
