T h a n k sg iv in g services w ere held by F ath e r Gall for th e C atholic stu d e n ts on T h a n k sg iv in g m orning. T h e S enior girls are w ondering w hy the Senior boys do not have some notes from th eir vocational d e p a rt m ents. Sophom ore boys were th e victors in th e bag ru sh on T h an k sg iv in g , b u t th e B rew er H all boys carried off the honor at shin n ey . T h e usual big d in n er given on T h an k sg iv in g was in evidence anti our big d in in g hall was the scene of m uch enjoym ent. Miss L au ren ce and Miss R eed, our head and a s sistan t nurses, w orked heroically in g iv in g the w ounded and m aim ed train m en first aid at the tim e of the w reck. 1 he railro ad head men spoke very appreciatively of th e ir splendid w ork. 1 he R ed Cross driv e at C hem aw a was q u ite su c cessful, th e re being' a very respectable num ber of dollars tu rn ed in to th e W illam ette C h ap ter. M is. Cox and Miss R oberts were rep resen tativ es of the Red Cross at Chem aw a. Basketball practice com m enced last M onday ev en ing. Before m any d ay s th e re will be a-half dozen team s at w ork, all m em bers striv in g to m ake our varsity team . W e should be able to p u t o u t a stro n g er team th an ever this year and be able to hold o u r own w ith any of the big conference team s. S u p e rin te n d e n t H all and Mr. R. G . H enderson, to g eth er w ith the S o u th ern Pacific S u p erin ten d en t, Road M aster and M aster M echanic, co n stitu ted th e Board of In q u iry to in v estig ate the collision between train 227 and 221 at C hem aw a on N ovem ber 24th. T hey were assisted by a rep resen tativ e of th e In te r state Com m erce Com m ission as well as m em bers of th e S tate In d u stria l Com m ission. T h e en te rta in m e n t given on T h a n k sg iv in g E ve by th e stu d e n ts of the th ird , fo u rth and fifth grades was well rendered from b eg in n in g to end. T h e little folks acquitted them selves well. F o r m any of them this was th eir first attem p t and th e efforts show ed good d rillin g on the p art of th e teachers, Mrs. Iliff, Miss E arlo u g h er and Miss A hrens, to whom the credit for the e n tertain m en t is due. M rs. T u rn e y assisted w ith the music and was accom panist on th e piano. T he school o rch estra fu rn ish ed th ree num bers. A u tu m n decorations, significant of T h an k sg iv in g were in evi dence. O w ing to lack of responsibility and p roper diligence on p art of a fre ig h t train co n d u cto r and braketnan a very serious rear-end collision took place at Chem awa last week, w hich resu lted in one man losing a leg and foui others being badly in ju red , besides m any th o u sands of dollars w o rth of railroad and o th er property destroyed. T h is w reck has been th e cause of m uch activ ity at C hem aw a, h u n d red s of people visiting the scene, w hich to g eth er w ith tw o w recking tra in s and large crews of m en, added to railroad officials galore, has m ade th is place th e ce n ter of all eyes. T h e w reck occurred a t 1:30 a. m. on W ednesday, the 2 4th, and at this tim e th e w reck in g tra in s are still at w ork. PAG E 3 L IT E R A R Y SOCIETIES E xcelsior On F rid ay evening the follow ing program was re n dered at the E xcelsior L ite ra ry Society: R ecitation, Jam es Brooks; vocal trio , N ick S tep itin , L aurance M erculief and N ew m an R ock. A dialogue was given by W ilfred E vans and M erton P orter; Roy C ourville gave some good jokes and Russel M arkussen some rid d les. M r. Jam es, official visitor, gave th e society some valuable advice, as did our advisory m em ber, Miss H e n d rix . W inona— R eliance A rtistic little posters announced the an n u al jo in t met tin g of the W inona and R eliance societies, w hich was held in the gym nasium on F rid a y evening. Ju lia Gromoff, W inona president, was in the ch air and C harles E ll, R eliance secretary, at th e records. W il liam K ennedy gave a brief but good address and A rth u r Johnson followed w ith a solo; C arrie A nderson recited And so was I ” and L illian G au th ier played a piano num ber. A nna H olst and C harles B uchert appeared in a C om edy” w hich w as followed by a q u arte t com posed of H en rietta C ham berlin, Josephine C orbett, A, th u r Johnson and A llan S hepard. T h en Josephine C orbett read the c u rren t num ber of the W inona W ar \ \ hoop and G eorge N ix gave som e good accordion m usic. A fter this C larence E dw ards and H attie M artin won th e debate from C ath erin e Reed and W il liam F razier. T h e question was: “ Resolved, T h a t capital p u n ish m en t should be abolished in O re g o n .” T h e ju d g e s decided in favor of O re g o n ’s present law . M audie C raig and A nnabelle W oods san g popular songs to g u ita r accom panim ent furnished by E m m a C arlson. E d n a W illette played piano m usic several tim es d u rin g th e evening. A lig h t luncheon was served at the end of the literary program . T h e m eet ing ad jo u rn ed by the sin g in g of th e C hem aw a song. Mrs. Brickell and M r. T u rn e y w ere present as official visitors and several other guests w ere present. T h is was one of the m ost successful and pleasant of the m any m eetings w hich these two societies have held. TH E JU N IO R S “LITTLE T H E A T R E ” On F rid ay at E n g lish period the Ju n io rs gave tw o sh o rt plays. T h e plays were m ade by th e class from tw o of O .H e n ry ’s stories— “ T he L ast L ea f” and “ T h e R ansom of Red C h ie f.” H a ttie C a y to n ’s version of 1 he L ast Leaf and A lex W illiam s’ Ransom of Red C h ie f” were th e ones chosen for rep resen tatio n .
