Y our own approval of y o u r actions is m ost essential. W hatever you do, resolve th a t you will do it in such a way th at a t n ig h t you can look back over the d a y ’s w ork w ith suprem e satisfaction; w ith th e know ledge th a t you have stam ped yo u r in d iv id u ality , y o u r honesty of purpose, y o u r m anhood or w om anhood upon you r d a y ’s w ork; th a t you are not asham ed of it, but th a t you are even proud of it. N ever leave a day behind you in w hich you may be asham ed of th at d a y ’s accom plishm ent. M ake it a ru le of y o u r life to leave yo u r d ay behind you w ith satisfaction, wdth th e consciousness th a t at least you have done y o u r best and are not asham ed of it. If you do not happen to have had som e-one to d irect y o u r day s w ork, you alw ays have an inside, an in te rn a l boss or em ployer, whose approval is in fin itely m ore valuable to you, because if you do n o t get th e “ A m en ” of y o u r in n er consciousness, if th ere is an y protest in your n atu re ag ain st y o u r d a y ’s w ork, a n y th in g inside of you th a t condem ns it, th is will m ar your self-respect. You will not th in k so m uch of yourself. If you g et th e disapproval of th is in n er self, especially if its p rotest is frequent or h ab itu al, you begin to go dow n very rapidly. You m ust have the approval of th e h ig h est th in g w ithin you or you can never be satisfied w ith y o u r self, can never be happy, can never live an efficient life. I t is m ighty com forting to secure th e approval o f people, but it is absolutely im perative th a t you get th e approval of y o u r in n er self if you w ould live peacefully, happily, successfully. D o n ’t p u t too g reat em phasis upon the applause or approval of people o u tsid e w hen th ere is an in n er protest. Y ou m ay be a trem en d o u s success in the eyes of those around y o u , but a total failu re in th e eyes of yourself, in th e estim atio n of th is in n er con sciousness w hich passes upon your every act, app ro v in g or p ro testin g ag ain st it. You m ust have y o u r own approval no m atter w hat o th er people say; you m ust know th a t you are a success or you will never be a happy or efficient m an or w om an. No. 9 I t is a w onderful th in g to form a habit of never leaving undone y o u r d a y ’s w ork, or u n til it satisfies you, then you can in honesty say: “ T here, th a t’s a good job; it has been done as well as I can do it. has my a p p ro v a l.” It O ne cannot begin to tell you w hat such a habit will do for yo u — doing everything to a finish. W e know w hen we have done a right th in g and we know w hen it is not rig h t. W e m ust get our own approval. If we have th a t we can stand all kinds of criticism s and sneers from those around us. U nless you have th is inner approval of having done your own work rig h t, of being square, you are not a success. You cannot get aw ay from this inner ju d g e , for it is your ideal, your other self, your very best self, and this self is the one you m ust satisfy in order to live peacefully and harm oniously. You may have th e approval of the w orld, of society in general, b u t if th ere is th a t inw’ard p ro test w ithin you against w h at you are doing, a little small voice w hich is c o n sta n tly saying, “ You know th a t this is not rig h t; you know th at th is is not su c cess,” you are sim ply posing, you are w earing a m ask, you are deceiving, you are not honest, you are not square. So long as this goes on you are a failure, no m atter how m uch m oney you m ay pile up or how high you are in your vocation. You can never get aw ay from y o u r in n e r self w hich is not subject to pain, failure, th a t cam e into the world to accom pany you, and will go o u t of the world w ith you, for it is y o u r real self, the very tru th of y o u r be in g , the reality of you. Y our connection w ith G od, y o u r reflection of H im , is as th e rays of light r a d i ate from the su n . W hatever you do alw ays get the approval of your inner self, alw ays, every day and th u s learn to rely upon yourself, th at you may live harm oniously, peace fu lly —be satisfied and happy. T h e sophom ore girls have begun th eir w ork in dom estic science, and having had a year to establish w o rk in g principles, are now ready to take on responsi bility. W e are hoping for a splendid te rm ’s w ork and it is up to us to get it. W onder who our honor stu d e n ts will be?
