21 TO 0
O ur 1920 football squad closed a very successful
season w hen it defeated the G oldendale Legion team
21 to 0 on T h an k sg iv in g Day at G oldendale, W ash
in g to n . Coach Sanders and fourteen men boarded
th e train at Chem aw a early T h u rsd ay m orning, a r r iv
ing at G oldendale shortly after noon.
Both team s averaged about th e sam e in w eight.
T h o u g h th e field was wet and soggy th e gam e was
fast and our team com pleted several forw ard passes
for long gains. L ouis Colby also got aw ay and
bro u g h t th e spectators to th eir feet by a 40-yard ru n
on a criss-cross play. E arly in the second q u arter
N uckolls com pleted two p retty passes th at gained 20
y ard s each and brought the ball w ithin the L eg io n ’s
one-yard line. C hoate carried th e ball across th e
chalk lin e in the n ex t rush and kicked goal for the
first score. T h e first half ended 7 to 0.
But for two sh o rt passes th e second half was held
entirely to stra ig h t football. In th e third and fourth
q u a rte rs C hem aw a started to rush the ball from the
20-yard line on the kick-off and steady, determ ined
line bucks and off-end ru n s, grad u ally carried the ball
to the G oldendale goal line. Each tim e C hoate p lu n g
ed across th e last m ark for a touchdow n and booted the
ball betw een th e posts.
W ith only th ree m inu tes to play in the last period
Chem aw a carried the ball to the center of the field on
the kick-off. Tw o rush es placed the ball on the
L e g io n ’s 12-yard line and the w histle blew, ending
th e gam e 21 to 0.
T h e gam e was hard fo ught and every point earned.
A lth o u g h the G oldendale team was unable at any
tim e to advance the ball against the strong, stubborn
defense of the Chem aw a team they m anaged to hold
th e ball for four dow ns and p u n t 40 to 45 yards, th e re
by k eeping the score dow n.
T h e offensive and defensive w ork of our line and
back field was splendid and p retty to see and won the
adm iratio n of m any spectators.
T h o u g h we lost the first two gam es we can p rin t the
