T H E C H E M A W A A M E R IC A N HALLOWEEN PARTY O ne of the p rettiest as well as th e m ost enjoyable social affairs given th is year w as th e H allow een p arty given by th e older stu d e n ts last S atu rd ay evening. T h e gy nnasium was transform ed in to a veritable a u tu m n bow er ;bunches of b rig h t colored leaves covered th e ceiling w hile festoons of leaves and jack -o ’-la n te rn s stretched aro u n d th e hall; p u m p k in s and shocks of corn covered each co rn er. T h e m usic was fu rn ish ed by th e school o rchestra and everyone w as loud in praise of th e splendid m usic rendered . As th e last num ber was given all lig h ts w ere ex tin g u ish ed save those of the m any ja c k ’o-lan- t^rn s, and it wrould be h ard to find a p rettier sig h t th a n th a t of th e m yriads of au tu m n leaves falling g en tly all over th e hall from unseen spots above. W e are glad to welcome F ra n k lin P erry and F elicia H ostler back to grade four after several days absence. A flourishing Y. W . C. A. of about 30 of th e girls from W inona H all has ju st been organized. T h e ir colors are p u rp le and w hite. Tw o of the fourth graders appeared on th e roll of honor. T h eir classm ates are quite proud of them . T h ere will be m ore of th e fourth n ext m onth. W atch us. F ra n k C. Johnson was a visitor at the Y. M. C. A. at Salem last Sunday and reports a warm welcome from the m em bers. H e also attended th e M ethodist church w hile in tow n. T h e sew ing room girls are very m uch interested in th e ir w ork. T h e lectures given by Miss M itchell w ith reference to the different fabrics m ade from vege table fillers are very instru ctiv e. FOOTBALL NOTES H en ry E lk is now try in g o u t at cen ter. Several of the boys received m inor bruises in the gam e S atu rd ay , b u t all were o u t to practice M onday ex cep tin g P eter Dick. T he boys are w o rking hard and earnestly every day and exp ect to show a different gam e ag ain t P a cific U niversity n ex t S atu rd ay . T h e football boys seem not at all discouraged over last S a tu rd a y ’s defeat for they realize th a t it takes tim e and h ard practice to m ake a good team . G lenn S. W arn er, b ro th er of o u r coach, has ju st signed a co n tract to coach th e U niversity of P ittsburg for th e n ex t four years. H is team defeated P en n sy l vania, S atu rd ay , 20-0. A fine new b u ck in g m achine, m ade in the c a rp e n ter shop, m ade its first appearance on the field y e ste r day and will be a g reat help to the coaches in devel o ping a q u ick -ch arg in g line, PUPILS’ NEWS ITEMS T h e eig h th grade has been solving problem s in co n crete w ork. Effie Davis leads th e seventh grade class, w hile G eorge Berry is a close second. T h e W inona Societv gave the w eekly program on A “SPOOKY” PARTY “ I know som ething I w o n ’t tell, hidden in th is pea n u t s h e ll.” T h u s was the curiosity of the bidden guests w hetted so they eagerly opened the peanut in w hich th e follow ing invitation was hidden: “ Pray, once be not so proud, But com e an d jo in o u r m erry crow d; At no t too g re a t a ta sk , Come hid b eh in d a Saucy m ask. G h o sts, w itches, ow ls, and cats, S m ith ’s is w here w e ’ll all be at F ro m eig h t to ten o ’clock C om plete will be o u r flock. ‘on H a llo w e e n .’ E sco rt a m ate and sit beside ’er, M ake fun, a n d sip a lo t of cider; W e ’ll eat som e fru it, an d crack som e n u ts, So b rin g a n ic k le ’s w orth of n u ts .’’ A bout thirty-five guests g athered at th e room s of Mr. and Mrs. Sm ith last T uesday evening and enjoyed an evening th at was ch u ck full of fun and novelties. A u tu m n h av e s, ja ck -o ’-lan tern s, and p u m p k in s e n hanced th e already p eiv ad in g H allow een atm osphere. O ne jolly gam e followed another; fo rtu n es were told b y reading cards; all were eager to find o u t, by rin g s suspended in the archw ays, how m any years would pass before m arriage would overtake them ; the initial of the fu tu re m ate was discovered by letters carved in pum pkins. Music and readings were m ingled in w ith the jollity. Delicious refreshm ents of cider, d o u g h n u ts, apples, salad, cocoa, punch and assorted n u ts were served. T h e evening was a delightful affair and everyone en- joved them selves to the fullest ex ten t.
