H ow do you study? H ave our boys and girls th o u g h t ot this? W hen th e h ours for literary work are so lim ited it is vastly im p o rtan t th a t th ey be used to th e very best adv an tag e. If the th ree h o u rs you have in th e class room are sp en t in leisurely sk im m in g over th e lessons and tru s tin g to luck th a t you will be called upon first or if you are d ep en d in g u p on th e teach er to follow th e line for recitatio n s and co u n t the verse, w ord, question, or problem w hich w ould fall to you, m em orizing it for th e tim e, how m uch useful know ledge can you store away? If in y o u r arith m etic you m erely w ork for the “ a n sw e r,” try in g th e problem forw ard, backw ard, or any way in order to get the figures th at stand for th e c o r rect resu lt, do you th in k you will ever develop ability to reason out or calculate w ith u n d erstan d in g the practical propositions th a t you will meet in business or in ord in ary every day life? If you m echanically read or m em orize yo u r lessons in h isto ry , will you get au actual u n d ersta n d in g of the relatio n s of th e p resent g en eratio n and all its civilization to the past ages? T o answ er these questions “ n o ” is th e only answ er; so in all y o u r lessons m echanical and vague study will b rin g little useful know ledge, will use u p m uch valuable tim e, and it will b rin g you n o th in g th a t you can feel is your own to keep. On th e o th er h and, if you face each lesson w ith a definite purpose you can m ake it p ractical, you can m ake it serve vou, and it will become a p a rt of your own th o u g h ts. T o accom plish th is, you m ust get in and dig, d ig to th e bottom , for it is th ere you will find the real tre a s ure. You will realize sadlv if you go to H igh School th a t as vperficial p reparation is a g reat hin d ran ce and the chances will be against your success. You may app ear to have a fairly good fund of know ledge, but com petition in th e public school classes will soon prove the kind of stu d y you applied and th e m ethods you followed w hile here in school. R em em ber, it is d ig g in g , not skim m ing, th at saves the tim e and b rin g s results.
