T h o u g h we can n o t avoid occasional periods when our u n d e rta k ings look d ark and seem im possible, yet we can avoid yielding to them . By g iv in g up we are su re to lose. Some of our stu d en ts will know well enough th e feel in g of d isco u rag em en t, and it is ju st now they need to exert all th eir pow ers to resist th e feeling. It is tru e m any of you have w orked under difficulties and d isco u rag in g conditions, and you deserve and do re ceive sym p ath y ; but to give up w ithout a fierce fight w hen th e critical tim e approaches will forfeit all you have g ain ed . H e is, indeed, a w eak, cow ardly so l dier w ho in tim es of peace enjoys th e com fort and ease of a q u iet b arrack s life deserts at the approach of a b attle. H ow we despise such a ch aracter. Stay w ith th e u n d erta k in g u n til y o u r last effort fails, and if it m u st be a defeat tak e it bravely. T h en even the loss will be gain in ch aracter. T he battles th a t have m eant most in th e histo ry of th e world have been those w hich were won u n d er the hardest, m ost d isco u rag in g con d itio n s— battles w here th e victorious arm y en tered know ing th a t they were o utnum bered and outclassed and kn o w in g th a t the only hope was in a h ig h e r pow er w hich w ould cause th e rig h t to prevail, and th ey tru stin g th a t pow er, fought w ith u n conquerable w ill. W ill and d eterm in atio n , w ith faith th a t th in g s m ust come rig h t even ag ain st th e g reatest odds, is now y o u r hope. You have been sick, you have had to do double d u ty , y o u r eyes have been w eak, you cam e in late, in some cases your reg u la r classw ork has been seriously in te rru p te d , and m any o th er th in g s have come in th e way to p re vent y o u r ad v an cem en t. Yes, it does look big. But w hat a glorious b attle it w ould seem to an old fighter! W hy, th e v ery elem ent of the im possible would be ju st th e sp u r to him . Be th e fighter. O ne point you probably do not realize. Y our feel in g of hopeless d iscouragem ent r.ot only hinders you, but is a d etrim en t to those who have th eir own fight to m ake. O ne blue, despondent stu d e n t may h in d er th e en tire class w hile he or she has th e pow er th ro u g h b rig h t hopefulness to create th e w in n in g sp irit, th e re by saving '.lie situ atio n in th e crisis. Now if you are one of those stu d e n ts facing disco u rag em en t, force No. 4 th a t d isco u raging th o u g h t out of the m ind and put in its place th e hope, the expectation of w in n in g , and grim ly fight to the last. In any event you will win in th a t w hich co u n ts heavily— stro n g m anhood or w om anhood.
