Chas. Laugbton was elected lieutenant-governor o tne new afcife of Washington on the 1st inst. He had already been lieutenant governor of the state of Nevada. In 1882, Charley Laugbton was nominated for lieutenant-governor by the Reno, Nevada, state Republican convention. Laugbton was a young man without any special experience in the affairs of state, and the point was made that he lacked the age and gravity. It was predicted that he would be beaten. He immediately went to work on hid own hook, and made his campaign after the moat original methods. Charley was a phenomenal violinist, and could do more tricks on the fid dle than anybody elBe in the diggins, and putting his fiddle under his arm started off one morning, telling his wife he wouldn't be baok until he was certain he had cleared up his fight Not much more -was heard of Laughton for some time. He did not hunt the beaten paths frequented by the campaigners, but took tho little logging and mining camps. He would scatter a few handbills an nouncing that he would speak at the red school house from 8 to 9 nnd play tho fiddle for the girls to dance from 10 to 12, admission free. This sort of announcement always drew a crowd, and Charley would open his speech something like this: Ladies and Gentlemen: About a week ago -I. ascertained that the Tegular -campaign speakers of both parties, p well as the candid dates, had-deoiaed to give this place the go by, because it was a small place and a few miles off the regular highway of campaign. Mr. Chairman, no place is small in my eyes where the hearts of its peo ple beat in sympathy for the prosper ity and advancement of Nevada, where woman reaches her loveliest perfection, Applause! where men are natural born thoroughbreds cheers, and where every intelligent voter de posits his ballot on election day for the safety of the battle born slate cheers and the regular Republican ticket. Tumultuous applause. . Charlie was a graceful talker, and ho soon had his audience. He knew when to talk and when to quit, and never boried his crowd, so that when 9 o'clock came and he laid aside cam paign talk and began to tune his violin, no one wanted to leave. He would tell the boys to clear away the benches, and while they were doing so he he was giving his audience the melting strains of "Tro vatore" in a style that they had sel dom heard before, every sweep of his bow, as the boys used to say, "hit them where they lived." By the time the floor was cleared the audience knew that the man at the bow was no "slouch" and when the Btrains of the Miserere died away and the applause that followed it, he would call out. "Partners for the basket quadrille," and in a few moments more he would be fiddling a merry tune, while the floor below him was all action and gaiety. Above the shuffle of the feet and the lively jump of the music, his voice would sound clear and leud: "Side coiiples forward." 'Gent's cirole to the left," etc, etc., until midnight. Then the boys and girls would beg him to run the dance "one hour more." "Do you guarantee me a Republi can majority in this town?" he would ask, as he tuned the E string. "We'll carry 'er foryoutwo to one," would be the response, and the dance would go on until about daylight. He went into every Democratic camp4n the state with his fiddle and conquered Bourbonism with music. "The Democratic party has more guts than brainB," he said one day to the writer, and then tapping the cat gut, significantly added: '.Til fight fire with fire." He wound up in the big towns on the eve of election, -lakliftBfdo hid fiddle, made a few good fepik'ches and4 wns elected by a handsome- majority, but not bo big a one as he-got across the river on the 1st ef: this month. There is upon the Yakima reserva tion a family of half breeds known a3 the Olneys. A romanoe is associ ated with the name. The white father of the Olneys died recently, but to the last he shunned his own race In some respects he was like Sam Houston, but, unlike Sam Hous ton, he never repented of his self banishment among the Indians. He was of a highly respectable Rhode Island family, and a graduate of Yale college, About the time he com pleted his studies the discovery of gold in California occurred. 01ney joined the Argotkuts of '49 and came west to seek his jp"ttuue." He left be hind him a sweetheart to whom he! was to be married as soon as he found the fortune and returned. The girl grew weary of waiting, as many another of hpr sex has done. About a year after reaching the coast Oluey received a letter announcing the mar riage of his betrothed. Ho never got over the blow. Drifting about for a time ho located in Oregon, and was made sheriff of a oounty. In those days there was usually exoitement enough in the duties of sheriff to banish the memory of the past. But after a while Oluey got tired of hunt ing down cnmirfals. He gave up his office, crossed the Columbia river, aud becamo a member of the Yakima tribe. His adoplion was in good faith on his part, for ho took an Indian wife and raked a family. As his ohildreu grew np he educated them with care, and when he died ho left them well provided for. Tim Olneys are iufluentinl Jin the tribe, and they exercise that influence for good. But they have no thought of leaving the reset vation.- They seem to have inherited from Jhejr fnlber hi disin clination for white society. Heart IiscnM. If a man decides ip beon the safe side these days he must be very care ful of the questions he asks. The other morning a board of trade man offered a friend this proposition : If a man who was born of French parents in Englaud thirty-five years ago dies in 4-merica, what is he? Tho friend argued that he was certainly a French man. The bystanders who were drawn into the heated discussion that followed declared that he was an Englishman. Several offers to bet on the point were made. Finally the board of trade man's friend put up 85 to back his French opinion ngatust S5 OUt UD Oil thfl "F.nrrliql, nni'm'rm Both parties agreed to leave it to tho uoara or trade man. They asked: "What was he?" Aud the board of trade man answered : "A corpse, you suckers he died." Then every one stepped up to the bar. Va., Bill Turner was hired to kill Charles West, nnd, on the commission of tho crime, his employers organized a mob and lynched Turner, This has just come to light, and more lynch ings are probable, as the community is much excited over the affair. Prominent citizens aro implicated, three of whom Lavo already fled from their homes.
