William Nye, New York : Deak Sib: Having read with much interest your instructive letters iu the and other papers, I thought it would be beneficial to many other readers, as -well as myself, to. gain your advice on a question which nearly concerns many of us. In a few week3 1 expect to take charge of my first school, a primary grade in the boys' department. Will you give us the benefit of your observation, if not your experience, in this line? In so doing you will greatly oblige, Sours respectfully, Mabt Bbown. 160 Church street, Knoxvillej Tenu. You could hardly have Bought out a source of richer, riper experience, Mary, if you had hunted the whole broad Union over. So long did I work in the great common school vineyard that now, after years de voted to other and varied pursuits, I can hardly drive past a cluster of straight-beech gads without climbing down from my richly upholstered carriage and cutting them against the opening of school. A great many people claim to be fond of teaching. Probably some of them are. Others say so because they huve heard it was a good thing to siy. I taught partly because I heard it was a good route to the presidency and partly because I needed the money. It was fortunate that I did not need much. I began by teaching a district school containing all sizes of chil dren, from the little cherub who seemed to regard ma as a dry nurse at $18 per month, up to the large, giggly girl who spat on her slate and wiped it with her apron. It is a tough experience for a boy of eighteen or nineteen to enter the schoolroom for the first time and read a chapter from the Bible, as I was expeoted to do. I had .not been accustomed to read every 'morning aloud from the Scriptures, and sol was embarrassed. Besides, I did not use good taste in the selections. I thought that the Old Testament would be more interesting to the children than the New, and so struck some matters of history there, tol'd in terse, rugged, realistic lan guage, which attracted more atten tion from the school than I had ex pected. I thought it would get bet ter as I moved on, but it did not, and so I tried another selection. Several large girls giggled aud ceased to agitate their gum as I struck into the second selection. It was hardly the thing for a school reading, and so I omitted the most of it. Our curriculum ran all the way from rash and teething rings up to triceometry, tatting and belles lettres. One thing Hike about the district school is its great range and its broad liberal soope. Sometimes while I was demonstrating a theorem in geometry for a large girl just ripening into glorious womanhood, a small blaok-and-tan child, four years would get a Lima bean up its nose, and I would have to take n button hook and attend to him, thus delay ing the cause of education in the in terests of agriculture. The school-teacher in our district was required to be also a social fa vorite both at evening parties and revivals, so it was really no sinecure, though, of course, the salary was ex cellent. The first year I was my own janitor and had to build my own fires and sweep the floor. This .gave zest to my work and made me feel that I was earning my money, so that at the end of the monjb, when I got my S18 less board and washing, I could look the school board in the face and say I had given an equivalent for this princely sum. Sometimes I would find a chalk portrait of myself on the blackboard with the frank admission made by some scholar underneath it that 1 Was "a d d fool " without sufficient cense to teatch the school," and I would feel that possibly such was the case. Then the doughn"ut3 and cookies lost their flavor'for me and tasted like the bottom of the tin din ner pail. You will have moments like these, Mary, when your heart will hang very low in your bosom, and just nt that moment your meanest soholar will "be the meanest He will be suc cessful in entertaining the sohool for an hour or so and you will not be able to find out how he does it. Large girls would proceed to gigglo if you had Tiny in your school, and all .wouldpseeH lost. We1 sirlike large girls everywhere excepfnf a district school. There, they and their ways are past finding out But I have lived to see all of the naughty big girls o'.my sohool richly J pumsuea in airer years. They are all married now. Some of them were punished worse than the others. They married self-made men, who fre'quenty alluded to it. Yott will have to" encourage de clamations, no doubt, Mary. The parents will insist upon it. Every two weeks you. should have pieces spoken in - the. afternoon and spell down afterward. Yon will probably try to teach the boys elooution and gesturing. Do not teach them too much of it, however. Nothing can add to the honors of a speech so much as the gestures generally taught by young teaohers at sohool. Do not spoil the natural gait of a bright boy by introducing the pat ent, whole-arm movement in decla mation denoting wrath, or the Bar ret gnttnral, cut-off style of sup pressed emotion. But t have made this letter ton longt Mary, and I will apologize. I wish .you great .good fortune with your school and hope that some fu ture president may in year3 to come say that you first aroused his ambi tions and gave him a boom in your little primary school. Good luck to you. Keep the room well ventilated and do not sacrifice true advancement at the shiine of di abolical discipline. That was ray motto and that is why my soholars learned faster and had more fun than those of any other school in our county. BiLii Nye. Do not allow the accumulation of Scurf or Dandruff, wheu it can be easily preveuted by the use of Ayer's Hair Vigor. A Versatile Jurist. It was in Sabiue comity, Texas, a few years beforo the late war. Judge B was holding court on the sec- oond floor of a building. On the first floor a gambling bank wan in full blast, aud tho players unuoed the court very ranch by their wrangling. After several ineffectual attempts by the officer of the court to enforce or der,the judge left his bench, entered the gambling room and took a liana in the game. An hour later ho re-entered the court room and throwing a small sack of money on his desk, pine idly remarked: "This court has got to have order aud Pm going to have it, even if I have to bust the bank again every day." The oourfc had striot order during the remainder of the eession. Texas Sift ingf Breathing tbe ficrms of Disease.
