The Gen. Miles is off for Gray's harbor at six this morning. High water, lines dewn: no die patolies; serry: can't help it. Don't fail to hear Prof. Aulguire to -aright who speaks at Liberty Hall. Admission free. "ihe li. It. Thompson being tem porarily disabled, the Bonita is run ning in her place. E. B. Beck arrived in New York on the 20th ult., from a European trip, much -improved in health. Beginning to-day the O. K. & N. Co. will sell excursion tickets to San Francisco and return for S30. Levi Knott, a well known Orego nian and resident of Portland, died at Denver, Colorado, on the 28th ult. Regular monthly meeting of the Astoria Building and Loan associa tion at 750 this evening, at the hall of Rescue No. 2. The hook and ladder and hose teams are doing some lively training, and if they don't get there, Eli, it will be because better beats them. J. G. Ross, of the Astor house, yes terday received a letter of inquiry regarding the price of board, etc, from a resident of Osco, Ills., who purposes Sojourning in this city. Up at Kalama the N. P. R. R. folks are making big preparations for the June rise. The dook is being torn jup, raised and repaired. It is thought that there will be a temporary trans fer between Kelso and Columbia City. - A race between two "WhiteU boats in front of the oity came to a sudden end yesterday afternoon by one of the boats upsetting, the occupants ding ing to the mast till flung into the .water.- They were rescued by their .competitors. Not the least among the pleasant observances of last Monday was the decoration of graves of friends by loving survivors, many who belonged to the lowly army of private workers "being thus kindly remembered by those from whom they had strayed on Life's pathway. A game of baseball was played in . the court house yard on Monday af ternoon, the closeness of the bcot6 making it a matter of difficulty for the umpire to officially decide which "team" won. It is understood that in three innings the score stood 114 114, and the last run is still un uwardei. Boat No. 21 belonging to the I. X. L. Packing company went ashore at Sand Island yesterday morning; one of the occupants, Erick Johnson, was drowned; his companion was saved. The funeral will be from Coroner Ross' rooms at four o'clock this af ternoon, under the auspices of the fishermen's union. There was a large audience at-the opera house last night, and Baird's minstrels gave a very satisfac tory performance. They have half a dozen men in the com pany that are a whole show in themselves, and the reputation for ability that preceded them was in creased by the masterly manner in wmou iney gave ineir ainerent spe cialties. "High water" is reported from points inland. About the only no ticeable difference that high water makes down this way is at.the mouth of the river, and it is an " important one to the fishermen. Boats in the vicinity of Peacock spit usually de pend on the flood to come in on, but when the river is rising at the pres ent rate it tends to keep the tide out and the almost constant ebb causes many a one to lose his net in a sud den struggle with the breakers. Eastern railroad sharps who claim to know, say that the seventy-five days suspension of the long and short haul clause of the interstate commerce law will not be renewed when it expires. If this be so it would be a good idea for Pacific coast meichants to get all the freight possible out from the east before the 15th of next month. But so many were caught with big stocks when the suspension went into effect that it is hard to find out just what - to do. It Beems to be one of the cas es where the less a man does in view . of the probable future the better off he is. There is a time in every man's life when he can't make any money. Take It In Time. Humes and five other wrecked mariners are in the city and leave this morning for Victoria. They are sealers from the chooner Lily L., the captain of which says they de seited hira off Cape Foulweather, May 11. Humes and his comrades tell a very different story. They say they left the vessel under orders that morning in two boats to cruise south by east, and night coming on, no sign of the vessel which should have pioked them up and they being short of provisions they had to make shore to get something to eat They beached the boats at the mouth of Salmou river, 25 mile3 below Nes tucca, on the 12th amid great dan gers, losing guns and personal effects, and, after considerable suffering, reached the Neatucca, where they were kindly cared for and carried here on the Queen of the Bay. Humes says it was bad enough to be cast away and made struggle for life on a lonely and surf-beaten coast, without being charged by his captain with being a deserter. The owner of the vessel telegraphed him funds from San Francisco last Monday, and instructed him to join his vessel at Victoria. A Prospective Treaty. San Francisco, May 30. Mail from the Orient received here Jto-day, con tains the following, among other news: The Hong Kong Mail of April 29, says; "Doubts are entertained con cerning the measures whioh may be taken to further restrict or altogether prohibit the admission of Chinese in to the United States. It appears to have exercised a marked influence upon passenger traffic to California. During the last two months there have arrived here in the Pacific Mail and Occidental & Oriental steamers, five steamers, ouly 845 Chinese pas sengers from California, while during the same period there have departed for San Francisco, in six steamers of these companies, no less than 5,095 Chinese passengers. All excepting a very small percentage of these out ward passengers are the possessors of certificates, and a certain proportion of these large numbers of de partures may be natives returning to states after a New Yenr's visit to the Middle Kingdom. At the same time there can be little doubt but that the cautious and far-seeing celestials, fearing that the treaty now being ne gotiated by Colonel Denby, at Peking, may materially curtail tho facilities of immigration into the United States, are now taking time by tho forelock and hurrying forward to get in before the door is closed. Those only who are compelled to leave the states are now taking passage home ward. The Chinese government are understood to have expressed the mont perfect indifference whether im migration into the states is stopped 6t continued." Astoria Illustrated. TLe forthcoming number of the Wes tSliore to be devoted to Astoria and surroundings promises to be one which Astorians will have reason to give liberal and wide spread circula tion. Mr. Samuel, the publisher, is now in the city superintending the work, and no effort or expense will be spared to bring Astoria's advan tages as a commercial city and a summer resort in a proper and strik ing way before the eyes of its thou sands of readers. Yesterday one of the artists was dispatched to Seaside to sketch in that locality, and this morning an artist leaves for the other side. The illus trations will embrace everything that is likely to impress people abroad with what Astoria has already accom plished, and the accompanying ar ti de will show what the future possi bilities are. The work done by the West Shore is thorough and artistic, and our citi zens are to be congratulated that such a number is being prepared, which will certainly prove of benefit to us. Brace Up. Chairman Midgley, of the southwestern statis tic bureau and the Pacifio coast asso ciation, returned yesterday from New York, where he has been attending a meeting of the representatives of the Eastern Trunk line, the Central Traf fic association and the Transconti nental association, in regard to the division of rates on Pacific coast through traffic. He says that the re commendation of the committee, con sisting of Chairman Fink, of Trunk Lines; Chairman Blanchard of the Central Traffic association; Chair man Midgley. of the Pacific Coast association; General traffic manager Stubb3, of the Southern and Central Pacific, and General traffic manager White, of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, and the Atlantic and Pacific that the trunk lines and the central traffic association roads will accept twenty-five per cent, of the rates on both east and west bound California through traffic at whatever tariffs may be issued by the trans-continental roads. Tho paper adds: This will settle the difficulty regarding the division of the Pacific coast through traffic and enable, the California roads to compete against the Pacific Mail Steamship company. But fears are expressed that the California roads will not derive much benefit from the arrangements. The indications are that the interstate commerce commis sion, after tho expiration of the seventy-five days, for which section 4 of the law was suspended in favor of the California roads, will rescind its ac tion and compel them to make rates in conformity with the longandshort haul section of the new law, except on such commodities which are es necinllv' affected bv ocean comnet!- tion.
