Oolleotiiig Sad Debts. "We intend to make life very pleaiant for'tfie "man who owes small bills around this town that he is&ftie tefpay, but won't," said W., HTKeynoldSjv manager for Steuben.county of the Elmira Uni formed Collection company. "We are inthe field to collect accounts from just such customers, and if there is one who doesn't come down after we-have turned all our batteries1 on him, he's a man that dynamite wouldn't rattle." "The way the Uniformed Col lection company jvorks is this: Such persons as desire our services become subscribers to our plan, and pay a fee or bonus of 1. We furnish each subscriber with blanks, which he fills out and sends to his delinquent debtors, with a statemontr of 'their accounts. The blank simply a request for them to remit the j amount, with the declaration -that if' they do not their cases,wiHbe turned over to the Uniformed , Collection com pany. When the company re ceives a case a collector is sent at once to the debtor to solicit pay ment of the amount due. If he still refuses to pay, Ave send an other collector, who wears a strik ing uniform, with the word 'Col lector' in very distinct letters on the band of his hat. This collector visits the debtor three successive days at his house or place of busi ness. If the third visit does not result in ebtaining: the money the collector wears a hat on the band of which are the words "Collector of Bad Debtt,.'- His orders are 'to call on the debtor 'daily and de mand payment of the claim, or plaims against him. These calls soon attract the attention of the neighbors and become the talk of the town. It has got to bo a case hardened old pensioner in the con fidence of his butcher and baker and candlestick-maker who can boldly face more than half a dozen calls from the gentleman with the suggestive hatband, and the con sequence is that'an arrangement satisfactory to the creditor is al ways effected. We charge the oreditor ten or fifteen per cent, of the amount, as the case may be, and everybody is happy but the man who has come down with the skads. This method of collecting bad debts is no experiment. Wt have tried it in a hundred diU" r ent places, and never lost aUase yet. The system originated in Canada. We have had several collectors very'neatly done up' by irate debtors, but our men expect that, and assume all such risks' when they enler our employ. If a collector is disabled, we put a bigger man right in his place, and it has got to be a very, sultry day when we let a man rest easy while we've got a bill against him." Elmira Advertiser. t Seven Philadelphia newsboys engaged in a pie-eating match re cently for the amusement of Apol lo Senate, Knights of Sparta. The pies were large, thick, very juic'. and made of cherries. The boy who, without the aid of a knife, fork or finger first finished hispie was to have a dollar. Every boy was paid fifty cents in addition. The pies were on a narrow table, and after each boy's hand had been tied behind him time vas called. In five 'minutes Jimmy, Doughefly had eaten eyeryjerumb licked. the plate cleah'and looked! like a '-painted devil jn a panto-, mime. Two of the . boys were down on their knees, having dropped their pies on the floor. pleubisy cured. Kingston, Ontatmo, ) December 7, 1885. J Six years ago I caught a severe cold standing in an ice house with my coat off. I felt myself getting chilly and went to the house, where 1 shook for half an hour and then had high fever and terrible pain in my side and through my lungs. Tput an Allcock's Pobous Plasteb on my back and one on the front of my chest, and in a short time the pain decreased and I fell asleep, and did not wake until the next morning, when X was igain quite as well as ever. In telling my doctor about it, hesaid. I had been attacked with pleurisy and, possibly, pneumonia. E. E. Dudley. A Nasal, Injector free with each bottle of Shilon's Catarrh vRemedy "Price 50 cents.
