Holden will sell some miscellaneous dress good3 and furnishings at his auction rooms. Jas. Foster arrived on the Tele phone last Sunday with his shoulder out of joint, the result of trying to jump from a train going fifteen miles an hour at Ordway's. Salem is favorably impressed with the recent feat of a young business man of that place, who ate ten soda crackers in ten consecutive minutes without drinking anv water. The British hark Jlrittania cleared for Queenstown vesterdav with 72, 707 bns. wheat, worth $63,300. The Sir Henry Lawrence, previously re ported, arrived in last Sunday night. Portland eggs, occasionally over ripe, are meeting with ready sale at fifteen cents a dozen. They look bet ter scrambled than any other way. Clatsop eggs are quoted at 20 cents for twelve. The McMinville Reporter thinks that from that distance it looks very funny to arrest a citizen of Astoria for refusing to pay taxes. Indeed it dees: and the farther off you get the f tin nier it looks. Thompson and others of the "Thompson Opera company" are re ported playing to good houses at the California theater, which will tend greatly to cheer the hearts of the numerous Oregon creditors. Says the San Francisco Post of the 14th: "Last night the Trebelli. Musin concert drew an audienoe only limited by the capaoity of the Bald win theater, and the audience was as enthusiastic as it was large." From high railroad authority the Welcome hears that the O. R. & N. Co. lease is definitely off, and from equally high legal authority that tho papers mil all be signed and the lease go into effect within sixty days. At two o'clock this afternoon at the court house door, by order of the as signee, E. C. Holden will offer at public auction to the highest bidder for cash, the unpaid book accounts of the estate of Prael Bros., insolvent. The locomotive for J. C. Trnllinger's railway came dotfn on yesterday's riv er boat. This is the second railway engine in the county and the first brought here by private enterprise. Look out for the locomotive when the bell rings. J. G. Stuttz, whose theatrical com pany played here last week, is buying property throughout the northwest wherever he finds what he considers a good place to buy property in. He bought seven blocks of city property in Sprague. Ho tried to buy some in Astoria but the price asked paralyzed him. For a "wonder the Portland papers all agree on one thing that someone is to blame for the recent suicide of an ex-policeman in that city. Each journal advances a separate theory. As additional hypothesis The Asto rias suggests, that probably Elwanger himself "was somewhat to blame in the matter. The editor of the Seattle Press is ready to back with coin his opinion that the editor of the Seattle Post Intelligencer can lick the editor of the Tacojaa Ledger. If there be any possibility of hostilities, and a small bet would help the thing along, a wager can bo arranged. Two and a half on the Ledger man. Come, now. Next Friday Mme. Trebelli, the celebrated contralto, Mons. Musin, the violinist, Signor Spagnole, the tenor, and Herr Steindorff, the pianist. will appear in opera and concert at Ross' opera house. This company is i in receipt of high praise from the eastern press. The box sheet for the sale of reserved seats will be open at the Crystal Palace at ten o'clock to-morrow morning. Capt. Plummer, of the Wizard, while off shore about twenty miles, yesterday, sighted what he at first took to be a couple of castaways from some wreck, but on nearer- approach found that it was a fishing boat with two men in it. They had left Gray's harbor for Brookfield last Sunday, but when overhauled were too far to the south'ard to hope to make it. 'They were taken in tow and brought -jw far as Astoria on their way up the river. From the Oregonion it is learned that already this year "80,000 lbs of fresh Columbia river salmon has been Bhipped to the Gast." About the 15th of next August much will be said and sung about the catching of salmon after the legal time, and the "80,000 lbs" spoken of by the Orego nion represents about five per cent of the amount of spring salmon ille gally taken from the Columbia river so far this Beason. The "law" is all right: there is nothing the matter with "the law.' It is its enforcement or lack of enforcement that in this as in other respects umkes it a matter of ridicule instead of restraint. A complete list of the lighthouses, beacons and floating lights on tho Atlantic, gulf and Pacitio coasts, cor rected to January 1, 1887, has been published by the government print ing office. The characteristics of each light, and the color and descrip tion of the stations are given in full. Tho flashing white light at Cape Mendocino is visible twenty-eight nautical miles at sea, or farther than any other light in tho country. The Hashing light on the Farallone islands comes next, being visible twenty-six miles, followed by the fixed light at Point Loma, and the flashing light at Point iteyes, each of which can be seen for twenty-four miles. The care of the complexion has be come an accomplishment that no lady of refined tastes can afford to ignore, and in leading society circles it claims as much thought as do the fashions. It is an acknowledged fact that the variations of our climalb are very se vere on the complexion, noticeable by a roughness and dryness of the skin, and to counteract this effect it be comes necessary to call in tho aid of art. In the selection of this agent too much care cannot be exercised. It is well known to the chemist that many of the so-called "blooms," "balms," "'creams," etc., contain lead and other poisonous substances, the long-continued use of which is dan gerous. An old fellow with long hair and a face expressive of suspicion was ar rested for shooting at a United States soldier. It appeared from the evi dence that the soldier was peaceably walking along a quiet street when suddenly tho long haired man sprang from behind a tree and fired at him. When ho had been arraigned, and be fore tho judge had asked a question concerning the case, he said: "I don't expect no show, so whut is the use uv all this foolishness?" "What do you mean?" the judge de manded. 'Wall, I jest mean that 1 never heard nv the Yankees foolin' very long with er bushwhacker." "The man is crazy," said the judge. "I'll be blamed if I am." "Then what do you mean?" "W'y, I am er rebel Boldier, that's what I mean; yes, an' I shot at that Yankee jest the same as any uv the rest uv the boys would uv done." "My friend," said the judge, "is it possible that you do not know the war is over?" "War's over?" the prisoner gasped. "Yes; ended more than twenty years ago. wnere nave you ueen keeping yourself.' The prisoner, thoroughly overcome, sat down. The crowd that had as sembled gazed with deep interest upon him. The sympathetic judge suffered him to 'take his own time. After awhile he said: "It's blamed strange. W'y, thought the war was goin' on yit. The last regular fight I was in, and it was n mighty long time ago, us fellers was putty badly whupped, so I tuck to my heels an' went to the moun tains an' staid thar till tho other day, an' then, thinkin' that I'd try the. thing a few mo' whirls I came dpwn but couldn't find the enemy; but I got holt of a newspaper and seed, as I thought, that the war was still goin' on. I seed whar some feller was elected to office, not be cause he could read, but because he fit well in the army. The way the paper read I thought that the editor had just hung up some fresh scalps in his office, an' I felt sorter 'shamed uv myself lurkin' round with nary a scalp, sol put an extra charge in my old fusee and struck out. I came all the way to this town without seeing a single Yankee, but I seed one putty soon aftorwards and cracked a-loose at him. So ver say the war's over?" "Yes." "Dun quit fightiu'?" "Long ago." "Which side's whupped?" "The South." "South dun whnnped?" "Yes." "Whar'.s Lee?" "Dead." "Leo dead?" "Yes '' "Who killed him?" "Died a natural death." "Whar's the other generals?" "In congress?" "An' the colonels?" "In the legislatures of the different Btates." "Whar are the privates?" "Dead." "All killed?" "Every one." "What air von going to do with me?" "Nothing; you may go." "Wall, ef Lee an' ail the privates is dead; ef tho south is whupped an' the generals an' colonel have all knocked under, I reckon tho best thing I ken do is to quit." "Where do you live?" "My wife an' children live out here iu Saline county. I ain't seed them sence I fust j'iued the army, an' I'd better jog on out that way ef the war's over, fer I reckon they're sorter oneasy erbout me by this time' Is Consumption Incurable?
