Several New Lines Proposed During , 1 luciicacm itai- , i llVf-ie? rC fl.n ,nilforl riltlLTlnrr ! in the northwest daring 1887 will be done in Washington territory and in eastern Oregon,5' said a gentleman who pretends to know, to the N'eics. "Work will be pushed rapidly on the Seattle and Lake Shore and the Cascade j branch of the Northern Pacific will be ready in six weeks, via the switch back. "Among the railroad schemes on foot for which surveys are made, is the building of a line from Bel mont, W. 1'., through Garfield, Palouse City and Pullman to Gen essee, T. T., passing through a rich farming country. "Again, it is intended to reach the Casur d'Alene mines either by building from Creur d'Alene City, or from Spangle, on the Spokane & Palouse branch. By the latter route the distance i fortv-fiveJ miles. "A system of lines that will add greatly to the transportation facil ities of eastern Oregon and Wash ington branches off from the Spokane & Palouse at a point eight miles south of Pullman, and runs westerly parallel with the Snake river to Riparia. At this point the iine will cross to Eu reka flat, thence easterly to the neighborhood of Alto, thence south to Whetstone ITollow, a branch continuing on to Covello. The main line will run to Waits burg, up Copei creek to Dixie, thence along the foothills to Walla Walla, a very important shipping city, thence east of the O. 11. & N. line along the foothills to Milton, and thence to Wallula. Branches run from Milton to Centerville and Weston. Another proposed line will leave Wallula Junction, go up Vansycle canyon to Helix and fork, one brauch for Pendle ton and another for Centerville. "These proposed roads go right into the wheat raising country and drain up much of the trade en joyed by the O. R. &-N. Co. Any wheat or other freight intended for the O. R. & N. Co. will have to cross the new lines to reach that company. From Waitsburg to Walla Walla the proposed litw has the advantage over the O. I. & N., being twelve miles fnrtm-r east into the grain region. "TheO. R. &"NT. Co. has re ceived the right of way for a line from Prescott to Eureka Flat, a distance of eighteen miles, and will undoubtedly build this year. "The 0. & C. will be finished so that trains will be able to run from San Francisco to Portland in May. In fact I think that the northwest is beginning to get a few7 railwaj's, but I hope none too many for the amount of trade in the country.5' Disorders which Affect the Kidney Are among the most formidable knon. Dl abete. Bright's disease, gravel, and other complaints of the uilnary oigans, aie not ordinarily cured in severe ease?, bnt they maybe averted by timely medication. A useful stimulant of the urinary glands has ever been found In Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, a medicine wliieti not only affords the requisite stimulus when they become inactive, but increases their vigor and se cietive power. By Increasing the acthity of the kidneys and bladder, this medicine has the additional effect ot expelllim from the blood impurities which it is the peculiar omee 01 xnose organs 10 eliminate ana pass off. The Bitters Is also a puriller and strencthener of ihe bowels, an invlgorant of the stomach, and a matchless remedy for billousneM and fever and ague. It counter acts a tendency to premature decay, and sustains and comforts tho aged and Inllrm. As to dehorning cattle, Prof. Wallace says the best time to de horn is at one month old. The "embryo of tahe horn" should b cut out with a sharp knife, close to the skin, taking- a little skin with it. There will be but little pain, and this usually ends the horn. 'It is not cruel as asserted by some. The pain caused is, no doubt, much less than castration. '"Xk r wv Of the good thhigs of VvA.v this life are sorrowful ly let alone on account of Dyspepsia. Dement Tricks of Diamond Smugglers. "Please to hold ray bnby while "V "-- ..-.r- w " "V trunks; he will be quite good if you will shake his rattle," said a lady passenger to the officer who was waiting to look over her trav eling gear. And that officer good humoredly did as he was requested, shaking the rattle to the great de light of the little one. The rattle in question, which, fastened to a ribbon, was tied to the child's waist, was filled with gems of greatest value, a mode of smuggling that at the time was too simple for de tection. A clever female, attired in the costume of a sister of mercy, was passed over by the officers be cause she had no luggage worth examining. She possessed, how ever, a fine string of beads, which, with downcast eyes, she kept tell ing. Safe on land, she was affec tionately welcomed by two per sons dressed in costumes similar to her own. Need it be told that she was a smuggler, and that her beads were so constructed that each held a diamond weighing seven or eight carats? Another ingenious per son hit upon the plan of placing a few prqeious stones in a toy ka leidoscope, which had been given to a child, who carried it ashore in safety. A number of hom ing pigeons kept in cages, and purchased at a vil lage in Belgium and brought to the United States by way ol Havre, also played a profitable part, each of tho pigeons being freighted with a cargo of exquisite gems, concealed in quills, and carefully fastened to the message bearing dove. "An extensive sys tem of diamond smuggling was at one time carfied on fiom Canadian irround bv the aid of the homing pigeons. The discovery of this illicit trade was made accidental!; bj a farmer, who happened t6 shoot one o"the birds, arid n ex amining it found that there was fastened to its leg a quill contain ing a number of diamonds. A clew being obtained, the local hao- ltation of the pigeon proprietors was discovered and their mode of business put an end to. The scheme, stated simply, was to fly every week or ten days a flock of a W.en or fifteen pigeons, each car rying about half u dozen gems. As the duty on diamonds amounts to 10 per cent., the trouble taken to smuggle these gems into the unnea states does not seem so very remarkable. The value of the precious stones honestly im ported into ;ne united states is between 88,000,000 and $0,000,000 per annum, and it has been calcu lated that gems to half that sum escape payment of duty.
