Re garding the statement telegraphed last night that the Oregon & .Cali fornia railway had been trans ferred to the Southern Pacific compan. Col. Charles F. Crocker, vice president of the latter com pany, sent the associated press the following statement to-day: "The transfer of the Oregon & Califor nia railroad into possession of the Southern Pacific company awaits the delivering of certainsecurities in New York city, which will be accomplished about April 1 . The agreement made some months since in New York by Mr. Hunt ington and agents of the bondhold ers and stockholders of tho Oregon & California railroad has been rat ified." crocickk's views. Sax Fraxcisco, March 19. In the early part of last winter two announced negotiations were in progress looking to the purchase of the Oregon & California railway by the Southern Pacific company. It was thought at that time the transfer would be effected within a few weeks, but it was found that there were many difficulties to overcome, principally caused by the backwardness of some of the parties in signing contracts em bracing the terms of sale. On authority of C. F. Crocker, of the Southern Pacific company, it is now stated -that all important ar rangements have been completed and that the first step toward the settlement of the sale will be ta ken on the first of the coming month. "Negotiations have all been com pleted," said Col. C. F. Crocker today. "The contracts have been signed by agents representing the owners of the Oregon road, and all that remains to be done is the formal exchange of securities be tween the Oregon company and the Southern Pacific company." "What does that exchange sig nify?" was asked. "It means the delivery of the bonds of the Oregon & California railway to the Southern Pacifie company in exchange for new bonds issued by the latter cn-n-pany, and the terms of the con tract require that the bonds of the Oregon road be collected and de livered to the central trust com pany, in escrow, bv the first of April. The new bonds of the Southern Pacific company are now being engraved, and upon the above execution of the agreement these new bonds will be isued forty days latter."' "When do you expect to obtain possession of the road?" "There has been no date as yet fixed for that transfer, but you can say that there is no doubt that the' road will be surrendered to us by the first of July." "Is there any question about the sale being consummated?" "I think that there is no doubt that the delivery of securities will be made according to agreement, for the reason that agents of the other parties signed the agree ments, and their principals rati fied this agreement executed with Mr. Huntington." When do you expeot to com plete the California and Oregon extension, and close the gap be tween that and the Oregon rail road?" "We are now pushing work as fast as possible, but have a gap of forty-five miles to close. This is in the Siskiyou mountains, and will bo thb heaviest work on the entire line. At the present time we have about -1;000 men em pWcd, and are increasing the force as "fast as possible. If we have an open fall we expect to complete the road and have it open by December next. Early rains, however, have delayed work slightlv."f Sleeplessness. Narcotics and sedatives murder sleep; the unnatural stupor is soon followed by ill effects. Simmons Liver Regulator removes the cause of. restlessness and sleeplessness by regulating the bowels, by establishing good digestion and by quietinc the nerves, I have been a great sufferer from dj s pepsia and loss of sleep. As soon as I feel the least nervous I take a dose of Simmops Liver Regulator, and sleep all nlght." Mrs. R. Bryant, Griswoldsville.Ga. Eouffh Eailroad Travelinor. J. M. Rumsey and nine other men returned to this city Saturday afternoon on the Sound train, hav ing had an experience they do not desire to have repeated. Then left this city in February for the east, intending to go via the Cana dian Pacific. When the rocky mountains were reached a snow blockade put an end to further progress, and Rumsey, his com panions and twenty-five other pas sengers became dependent on the railroad company for their board and lodging. They were anxious to reach their destination. The train and station men knew noth ing about when the blockade would be raised. All that they could say was that several thousand men were using every exertion to open the road. Finally Rumsey and his companions determined to re turn to Portland and were furnished free transportation by the Canadi an Pacific company. They report a large snow slide which occurred in the canyon of Frazer river. A train of cars with two locomotives was traveling eastward when the slide was noticed starting from the top of a high mountain across the river. The train stopped until the danger had passed, but so terrific was the slide in volume and veloc ity that it swept across the river of ice, buried the train and killed six men. yacs, 21. While cleaning out an old trunk a few days ago, Mrs. James Was son of Peoria, 111., found an old presidential election ticket. It is headed by Polk and Dallas, the successful candidates. The head ing of the ticket is a ludicrous drawing, representing Polk on a pig, and saying, "I don't know the breed, iudge, but he never flies the track." Henry Clay is bringing up the rear on a bear. He is made to say, "You'll beat at last," The ticket is yellow with age. It is probably the oldest one in exist ence, the date being 1844, and the owner values it highly. I.oxdox, March 20. It is re ported that the czar received a letter dated March 1, from the executive of the Nihilist com mittee, informing him that at the fitting of the committee, on Feb ruary 22, he was condemned to death and that fifty members were appointed to execute the sentence. WEAK LUNGS MADE STRONG. Persons who stay in-doors all ths time and lean over a counter or a desk, sooner or later discover that their lungs are giving out. Editors are often thus afilicted. Erastus R. Sutherland, editor of The Eastern State Journal, White Plains, New York, writes: "I have used Allcock's Porous Plasters, in my family since 1868. In that year I had an attack of pneu monia from which I was not ex pected to recover. My lungs were left in a very weak state. I commenced using Allcock's Porous Plasters, wearing them constantly three months, two on the breast and two on the back. The result was sur prising, at least to me. The pains in my lungs had left me, and I felt like " a giant refreshed with new wine."
