ir- - m is Wht gaUjj Horian. ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY MAKCII 20, 1SS7 Tin: "Waitsburg Tinu-t offers 1 00,000 lor a solution ofk the problem of 'How can the news paper business be made profi table?" Many a one has spent more than that and then was un able to "find out. There is only one spirit that achieves a great- success. The man who seeks only how to make himself most useful, whose aim is to render'himself indispensable to his emploj-er, whose whole being is animated with the purpose to fill the largest possible place in the walk assigned to him, has in the exhibition of that spirit the guarantee of Success. He com mands the situation. The man who accepts the unwholesome ad vice of the demagogue and seeks only how little he may do, -and how easy he may render his place and not lose his employment alto gether, is unfit for service. As soon as there is a supernumerary on the list, he becomes disengaged as least valuable to his employer. The mac who is afraid of doing too'much is near of kin to him who seeks to do nothing, and was be got in the samefamily. They are neither ot them in the remotest degree a relation to the man whose willingness to do every thing pos sible to his touch, places him at the head of the active list. Beeciiee's wish that no black should be worn at his funeral oc casions much criticism, as the wish was strictly observed. But it may well be asked, Was he not right? What occasion is there for all the sable pomp of woe as ordinarily observed when the spirit leaves the' earthly casket for another and u, better, world? It would, of course, provoke a storm of right eous indignation to hint that the reason for so much gloom on the occasioa of a death is that in the stress of affliction the Christian's failh-fails htm, and that, for the time the glories of the world be yond seem to vanish. Yet if this passionate mourning, which, in stead of being hidden in the depths of the heatt, is ohtnuled upon the notice of eveiy passer by, how shall it be made to har monize with the belief that the good who die are infinitely happier than they wore before? To don dark mourning because some one we love has been promoted from this world of pain and temptation to an eternity of peace is, to say the least, strangely inconsist ent;" while to tell all the world that, despite our loved one's immeasurable gain, we can only think of our own loss, is to pro claim our selfishness with a frank ness which is as un worth- as it is unnecessary. In the matter of crape wearing it would seem that the older countries of the world might, with advantage, sit at the. feet of Australia and New Zealand, .and learn from those colonies a lesson of which the former are much in need. In both those countries the announcement of a death, in the press, is often followed by these significant werds: "By the wish of the de ceased, his relatives will not wear mourning." And this suggests a still more efficacious method of abolishing the practice. As the world well knows, there are no injunctions so scrupulously obeyed as those which rich testators lay upon the recipients of their bounty. It might with great propriety be come the rule that among the clauses of every will should be included one enjoining the lega tees to weai no crape, on pain of forfeiture of their bequests, and the reign of crape would soon be ended. . Take It Ia Time. A inan who presents an appearance of debility, whose countenance is anx ious and who is subject to spells of faintness, is liable to sudden death from heart disease. Let him take Db. Fust's Heabt Remedy before it is too late.. At druggists. SI. 50. De scriptr?etreatise with each bottle; or sddms'XJ.Mack'&Oo., S. F. A LESSON WITH A MORAL. "When -will Our Eyei bo Opened to This Great National Calamity? The year 1886 played sad havoc with many prominent men of our country. Many of them died without warn ing, passing away apparently in the full flush of life. Others were sick hut a compara tively short time. "We turn to our files and are astonished to find that most of them died of apoplexy, of paralyEis, of nervous prostration, of malignant blood humor, of Bright's disease, of heart disease, of kidney disease, of rheumatism or of pneu monia. It is singular that most of our prominent men die of these disorders. Any journalist who watches the tele graph reports, will be astonished at the numerof prominent victims of these disorders. Many statements have appeared in our paper with others to the effect that the diseases that carried off so many prominent men in 1886, are really one disease, taking different names according to the location of the fatal effects. "When a valuable horte perishes, it becomes the nine days' talk of the sporting world, and yet thousands of ordinary horses are dying every day, their aggregate loss is enormous, and yetlheir death creates no comment. So it is with individuals. The cause of death of prominent men creates comment, especially when it can be shown tliat one unsuspected disease carries off most of them, and yet " vast numbers of ordinary men and women die before their time every year from the same cause." It is said if the blood is kept free from uric acid, that heart disease, paralysis, nervous prostration, pneu monia, rheumatism, and many cases of consumption, would never be known. This uric acid, we are told, is the waste of the system, and it is the duty of the kidneys to remove this waste. We are told that if the kidneys are maintained in perfect health, the uric, kidney, acid is kept out of the blood, and these sudden and univer sal diseases caused by uric acid will, in a large measure disappear. But how shall this be done? It ia folly to treat effects. If there is any known way of getting at the cause, that way should be known to the public. We believe that Warner's safe cure, of which so much has been written and so much talked of by the public generally, is now recognized by impartial physicians and the pub lic as the one specific for such diseases. Because public attention has been directed to this great remedy by means of advertising, some persons have not believed in the remedy. We cannot see how Mr. Warner could immediately benefit the public in any other way, and his valuable specific should not be condemned because some nostrums have come before the public in the same way, any more than that all doctors should be con demned because so maify of them are incompetent. It is astonishing what good opinions you hear on every side, of that great remedy, and public opinion thus based upon an actual experience, has all the weight and importance of absolute truth. At this time of the year, the uric acid in the blood invites pnenmonia and rheumatism, and there is not a . man who does not dread these mon j sters of disease; but he need have no fear of them we are told, if he nd the blood of the uric acid cause. These words are strong, and may sound like an advertisement, and be rejected as such by unthinking peo ple, but we believe they are the truth and as such should be spoken by every truth-loving newspaper.
